State and Region flags outdated and wrong

edit

Most flags of the Regions have been changed since around 2010. Even the Yangon Region flag have been changed twice: first in circa 2010 and then recently 2021.

To update new flag (and seal)

  • Flags of every Region (except Sagaing Region) are outdated. The flags are with colour backgrounds, the region seals at the centre, and the region names above the seal.
  • Yangon Region seal has been changed again in late September 2021.

To correct wrong colours

  • Naypyidaw Territory flag is with sky blue background (not white) and (without English name)
  • Kayin State flag: the top stripe is deep blue

Thanks for all this research, I think we need to find the official government notice (ပြန်တမ်း) about the official region flag changing. Changing Facebook profile picture, sadly, is not a good enough source. I see that it is being used and that's certainly a start. Happy to draw some of them later, but for wikipedia copyright we will have to redraw the seals ourselves. I don't think we should remove all the flags while we find out more, draw flags and fix it. You should instead add a note that the flag is outdated. I will revert your changes later if you don't disagree with this reasoning. EmeraldRange (talk/contribs) 21:31, 21 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey @EmeraldRange:. Don't you see? I did give the sources with news photos (including government's MDN) and regional government website. Not just Facebook. နေနီဝန်း (talk) 00:05, 22 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I was focused on Ayeyarwaddy Region and didnt look at the Yangon ones. But still, point stands for Ayeyarwaddy and some other regions. ပြန်တမ်း is the official list of all rules passed by the government in any form, even including salary changes. I think official flag change would be on there. EmeraldRange (talk/contribs) 01:53, 22 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

This flag   also didn't appear in the 2014 States Regions Sport Tournament.[2][3][4] I am confident to say that that Kachin State flag is the green one among the appeared flags, because of these sources: VoM(2019) , Burmese Kachin News(2020), and that this flag is still in use because of this source: (Myanmar National Post, 2022) [5][6]

@နေနီဝန်း What do you think the emblem in the middle of new Kachin flag is? It seems to still match up with the Kachin flag in the link provided here, but all your pictures are too low resolution to see. EmeraldRange (talk/contribs) 13:34, 30 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Reply to @Ninjastrikers:: No.
Many flags in that list are outdated due to recent changes, and estimated flag change dates' years are wrong.
• Both Ayeyarwaddy and Mandalay changed their flags' background to blue field but seem to be maintained charged seals, may be in late 2021 or early 2022 (not sure). Their flags shown in that list are direct predecessors to the current flags.
• (May be) in circa November 2021, Yangon Region flag have changed to a yellow-green-red tricolour (the same background as the union flag but) with a charged emblem (similar to the recently changed region seal, but not with exact same design) in the centre (flag seen in 2022)(Seal update in 2021 November), I am sure that the bottom of the charged emblem in the flag is a white ribbon with text "ရန်ကုန်တိုင်းဒေသကြီးအစိုးရ". The flag shown in that list is outdated, but I'm not sure it is the direct predecessor of current flag as there are several flags of Yangon (and Bago) appeared between 2010 and 2022.
• The date of the end of usage of old flags (shown in the left side in that lists) of Thanintharyi and Mandalay may be in circa 2010, instead of c. 2016, because that changed flags were seen in 2014 Tournament and the region names changed in 2010.
For the Magway's flag, the flag with only text "မကွေးတိုင်း" had been replaced by a new one since circa 2010, and so it is not the direct predecessor of current flag. The c.2010–c.2016 flag of Magway is with yellow background and a seal ("not the same' as current one).(2018)(2014)(2014)
• Most Regions seem to change their flags several times only within a few years. Especially, the previous flags (2010–2021) of Yangon, Magway and Bago are mysterious as there are several flag changes within just one or two years. (I'll write about them in another comment.)

Reply to @EmeraldRange:, I haven't seen any ပြန်တမ်း about the changes of regions and states. Only the 2018 Mon State flag change and the 2019 Sagaing Region flag change were discussed, approved, and adopted by State/Region Hluttaws. But other flags' changes seem to be changed without discussing in Hluttaw, and without public announcement. (The first flag change of Sagaing Region flag in circa 2010 was also without them.)

Currently, I've made [:File:Flag of Sagaing Region (2010-2019).jpg|Sagaing's c.2010–2019 flag] and corrected [:File:Flag of Naypyidaw Union Territory.png|Naypyitaw's flag]. @EmeraldRange:,@Ninjastrikers:. The 2010–2021 flags of most regions are mysterious. Yangon and Bago changed a lot of flags in a short period. (Those of Mandalay and Ayeyarwaddy are quite easy as they have just background colour difference from current ones.)

Those flags used before 1885 (national, royal, military, etc.)

edit

I request everyone, who interested in vexillology, can draw and can create svg files, to create news flag files or edit wrong flag files about the flag used in monarchic and imperialist Myanmar. Most of these flags I see in Wiki are with wrong symbols or missing important symbols.

  • National flag(s)

white field, green peacock
There are history records and books written in Burmese say that most Burmese dynasties used the flag with white field and green peacock as the national flag, don't know the exact date of first adoption date, but there are records saying that the earliest usage was during the time of the king 2nd Min Khaung (842–843 ME).
white field, red disk and green peacock or red peacock
A history record about the First Anglo-Burmese War mentions that on 10th waxing day of Nattaw of 1188 ME, the English flag in Yangon was lowered and replaced by the Burmese flag which is "white cloth, length of nine Taung, width of six Taung, inserted red at the centre, figure of peacock biting a flower branch, gold coated at the top". The record also mentioned that "placed as the same as it was placed before".

In this flag file, flower branch should be added as bitten by the peacock

---

I love this. I've been trying to find a proper source ever since someone tried to make their own. Can you link or find the source of that record? Happy to make this flag and upload it later this week. One important thing I want to mention is that the swallowtail like in the picture you used was used by the Portuguese mercenaries and not part of the actual Konbaung flags. • Thu Ye Gyi flag
File:1300-1885- Thu Ye Gyee flag (Hero's flag).gif
In this flag file, cirlces must be replaced with respective animal symbols

This was used as royal standard and war flag.

This flag is said to have the yellow circle representing the sun, and 7 figures in 7 colors for the 7 most powerful animals of the universe.
The colours and figures are :
1. Gold — Hanuman carrying king's dagger on the shoulder
2. White — Garuda swooping
3. Yellow — Rakshasa carrying king's dagger on the shoulder
4. Black — Peacock dancing
5. Green — Lion roaring
6. Red — Elephant stabbing
7. Pale colour — Nāga coiling and haughty

  • Royal Standards (may be)

There are seven flags (including the one similar to this sample:  ), with those 7 colours and 7 figures.

  • War flag

There are several war flags, with non-rectangular shape, that could be created. It seems that modern Myanmar Army Flag is based on one of these flag.

  • Boat Flag

A flag is attached to sail of boats, to indicate the direction of wind. It is known as Kokkalan.
There are also many unidentified flags.
You can use the followings as reference:

  • The picture drawings of flag drawn by U Ngwe Gaing on 20 May 1952, by copying the flag figures from ancient accordion folds stored at London, British Library, Oriental Department, Library.

A stamp issued on 2 March 1974 shows eight flags, including the swallowtail flag in which the peacock is red without the red circle and the flag pole has finial of gold spear.

Thus, I think that "အထွတ်ရွှေထည်" may mean "finial made of gold", rather than "gold coated at the top".

Military Flags

edit

@နေနီဝန်း: Some issues/comments about the military flags:

The ceremonial Guidon for the Army   is also used s a guidon to signify the Commander-in-Chief (Army). Same for Navy and Air Force

Every division has its own flag, not just LIDs. Bureau of Special Investigation is an example. Here's a photo of a flag from 409 division. General officers are called "flag officers" - the units that they command have unique flags. A normal division flag made into a guidon signifies the commanding general - usually a brigadier-general or major-general. I don't think LIDs are worth having a section. If we include every division and their guidon variant, the page will be very long. I would suggest a new article: List of Burmese military division flags if you want to list all the divisions in flag format.EmeraldRange (talk/contribs) 11:32, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Continued disruptive editing and edit warring

edit

Santiago Ríos Undurraga continuously added unrelated flags. Particularly, he seems to be just wanting to claim that "Myanmar was a colony of Thailand, because Thailand ruled a part of Shan State". He also added other flags such as "the Flag of The Azad Hind" just because its capital in exile was Yangon.
If you think that his claims are appropriate and acceptable, then

  • Add Hanthawadyy Kingdom's flag as a historical national flag in List of Thai flags, because almost all area of Thailand was actually owned by the Second Burmese Empire of Hanthawadyy Kingdom.
  • Add Hanthawadyy Kingdom's flag and all the flags of Konbaung Dynasty as historical national flag, war flags and royal standards in the List of Indian flags, because some Indian states such as Assam and Manipura were parts of Burmese Impires of dynasties.
  • Add all the flags of Konbaung Dynasty as historical national flag, war flags and royal standards in the List of Thai flags, because Burmese troops won the war on Ayutthaya and destroyed it, and the maps from History Textbooks taught in Myanmar schools claim that the whole Thailand is the territory owned by Konbaung kings.
  • Add 1948–1974 Myanmar national flag as a historical national flag in the List of flags of the United States because NCGUB exiled in US and used that flags in occasions.

State and Region Flags 2023

edit

@နေနီဝန်း Good news, Independence Day parade confirms most of the flags from last year. Bad news, three of them look different. Bago is light blue, Tanintharyi is green and Mandalay is back to the red flag. I'm inclined to argue that Mandalay never changed from the 2010-2022 flag and that there was just a variant used last year. thoguhts? EmeraldRange (talk/contribs) 19:06, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@EmeraldRange, @နေနီဝန်း, flags of States and Regions are decorated along the Pyay Road for the Independence Day and I just took photos of them. According to them, we need to adjust the flags of Bago, Mandalay, Magway and Kayah's flags. I don't know why they still use the old Bago flag with the text "ပဲခူးတိုင်း". The size of Kinnara from Kayah's flag is large and covers all three color stripes. For Magway, the background circle use the seal of Magway Government and added the line "မကွေးတိုင်းဒေသကြီး" in green. NinjaStrikers «» 06:35, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Interesting to see that Tanintharyi didn't change. Any thoughts on removing the current blue-background Mandalay flag entirely? If the only time the blue background was used was in last year's parade, I'm inclined to say it was a variant and make the 2010 version the 2010-present version.
Thank you again to @Albert Poliakoff for updating Kayah and Magway so quickly.

@EmeraldRange Instead of removing we can just make name changes and file redirects.

Reverted Ayeyarwady: From the photos of the Independence Day parade, the light blue is still being used. EmeraldRange (talk/contribs) 16:41, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmeraldRange You linked a photo of the Naypyitaw flag though. From a photo of Ninjastrikers and in the parade the flag is with dark blue background.Albert Poliakoff (talk) 00:19, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
