AFD?
editI was going to AFD this but changed my mind, as some of the information is salvageable but not as is. First, the name is flawed as the article is only about CHRISTIAN 'religious houses', by the admission of the article, and mainly Catholic only. Second, this seems like what a category is for, not an article, as it will likely only be a page of names of individual Catholic and/or other Christian churches. There are likely other issues, but those are the primary problems I see at first glance. Pharmboy (talk) 03:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- 1) The intro to which you object is descriptive, not prescriptive. If you know any non-Christian religious houses in Switzerland, please add them. Ditto non-Catholic religious houses (there is already one).
- 2)You are not up to speed on the relevant cats. The function of this list until a few days ago WAS performed by a single cat, "Monasteries in Switzerland", but along with several others that has now been split up by Order, and a national list is now necessary for ease of reference. Besides, the advantage of a list of that it can include subjects as yet lacking articles, of which here there are many.
- 3)Title: Comparable national lists, of which there are already a number, are called either "(List of) abbeys and priories of X" - this is no good, as not all the religious houses on this list are abbeys or priories; or "List of monasteries of X" - I would be quite happy with that, but there is a recent tendency among editors to insist that "monasteries" only include men's religious houses, and that a list titled "monasteries" should not include nunneries etc. To avoid the difficulty I have gone for a more neutral option, but "List of monasteries in Switzerland" causes me no problems at all.
- No comparable list that I am aware of specifies "Christian religious houses" or "Christian monasteries" in the title, possibly for the reason that no other major religion apart from Buddhism or ISKCON seems to have them, at least not in the western countries to which these articles mostly refer - but if you know any such in Switzerland, add 'em (back to point 1). If you are unhappy with this and wish to propose a renaming or a rethinking, you will need to raise it for a full discussion somewhere, as the principle will affect a large number of lists and cats. In the meantime I am happy to rework the into slightly, in the hope of moving on.HeartofaDog (talk) 03:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- no need to get defensive, I didn't AFD (only started to), but something just was wrong with an article that seems to be not what it is titled to be. I am not questioning your good faith, I am questioning the premise stated in the intro, and the title. Pharmboy (talk) 03:45, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- I didn't think at all that you were questioning my good faith and I didn't intend to be defensive, although I was surprised to find this article challenged, as there is a lot of precedent for exactly this type of list. I am of course very pleased that you opened a discussion here instead of going straight to AfD. Above is my thinking in some detail for the intro and the title, which I hope may have answered your concerns. But if you still see problems I should mention that I am about to be off Wikipedia for almost a week, so I wonder if you could hang on until I am back. HeartofaDog (talk) 04:04, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- I don't expect to do anything else of consequence to the article. I fixed the intro to make it more neutral now, that is all. I am not enough of an expert to judge whether or not the article is good or not, what set me off what the discrepancy in the title and the intro. I tend to troll around and look for 'problems', such as vandalism, spamming, articles that need deleting or referencing. I also create new stuff, etc. I just stumbed into this article, but now the intro is more neutral, so that is all that matters. Pharmboy (talk) 04:13, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
