Undo of added sourced material
editHi Jimi, would you please explain your undo of the last edit to this article? It seems to be valid with a reference to back it up. Was there some mistake or error? You cited no reason for doing so. I will also ask if you could please use the Edit summary when editing articles. Thank you in advance. – ░▒▓ №∶72.234.220.38 (talk) 07:27, 15 June 2020 (UTC) ▓▒░
Following up. As you did not reply to the "ping" from this Talk page I will assume you agree. Happy to see you taking an interested in this article, but Jimi, your undo/reverting of the last edit on this List of Deep Purple members article seems to violate the Wikipedia policies on removing content. Please note what it states:
- Consider carefully before reverting, as it rejects the contributions of another editor. Consider what you object to, and what the editor was attempting. Can you improve the edit, bringing progress, rather than reverting it? - This does not seem to have been done in this case.
- In the edit summary or on the talk page, succinctly explain why the change you are reverting was a bad idea or why reverting it is a better idea. – None of this was done by you.
- Lastly, when doing any edits, Wikipedia policy states that "It is considered good practice to provide a summary for every edit, especially when reverting (undoing) the actions of other editors or deleting existing text; otherwise, people may question your motives for the edit." – Also, not done.
Many editors here agree that one should revert only when necessary. It seems hard to explain how a good faith edit and one that has been reliably sourced for inclusion to an article is not valid content and is necessary to remove.
If you have an issue with "touring members" of a band being members, that is something to discuss elsewhere on Wikipedia. But I also note that you removed the one female touring member (Candice Night) of this band and left the male touring member (Joe Satriani). That may cause people to question the motives for the edit.
I have restored the reverted content, but if there was some other reason for doing this edit, if you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message here or on my talk page. Discussion is not really required with a MoS issue, but still good to have and recommended by Wikipedia:BRD. Regards. – ░▒▓ №∶72.234.220.38 (talk) 00:14, 19 June 2020 (UTC) ▓▒░
Members: "touring only" are not band members ?
edit@Binksternet: Hi Bink (okay to call you that?),
Do you have a MoS for this statement? In this, I both agree and disagree with you. I disagree because when one sees a person on stage shredding on guitar or belting out lyrics while the band is on stage when touring, one sure feels they are band members. I've also seen bands refer to them as members. But, I agree that they are not on the same level as constant band members who may also be creating music and lyrics for the group.
If you stick with the ("touring only" are not band members) idea, there are a mass of articles you'll need to be editing. I just spent 10 secs looking at just the A's – AC/DC, Accept, Aerosmith, Anthrax... all have touring only people listed as members.
I'm hoping there's a MoS or generally agreed-to concept that states touring members (note the constant use of the word "member"?) can be listed in these articles, but perhaps not put in the timeline which does sort of muddy it up. I hope you have the time to give your thoughts. Regards. – ░▒▓ №∶72.234.220.38 (talk) 22:50, 19 June 2020 (UTC) ▓▒░
- The band would have to announce that Joe Satriani is a band member, and Candice Night, and whoever else. Another possibility would be that the majority of observers are saying these people are band members. But here we see Pete Prown in Legends of Rock Guitar saying that Satriani was always just a temporary member, filling a hole until a permanent member could be found. Ian Gillan says in his autobiography that Satriani did not agree to join the band, saying he wanted to remain independent, that he would only cover Deep Purple's 1994 tour. - That does make sense to me Bink. Both Satriani and backing vocalist Candice Night were only performing with band for part of a year on one tour. You detailed Satriani and Night did not say she was asked to be a member as in the Music Street Journal interview, she states, "[Blackmore] asked me to join him on tour in 1993, Purple's last tour as the famous Mark 2 line up, and requested I sing back up vocals on his Difficult to Cure solo." That does not seem to be band membership. Would you be okay with my suggestion to follow what seems to be the now "standard" of adding these "touring only members" in a separate section/table on the "List of {bandname} members" articles? Also, not in the timeline? All the "A-band" articles I pointed to above seem to do this. Thanks for the reply, and as I've written before, big thanks for your tireless work here. – ░▒▓ №∶72.234.220.38 (talk) 09:03, 20 June 2020 (UTC) ▓▒░
