Cosmopilite vs Cosmopolite

edit

Mrs Cosmopilite is the correct spelling not Cosmopolite. Just checked it in Moving Pictures. Wikipedia finds her with Cosmopilite, but in the Lu-Tze Article the wrong spelling is very prominent and so it is here! I didn't check in other articles.

Source: Moving Pictures, Harper Torch page 330.

Could it be that there's a difference in British and American editions? Hoerzig (talk) 16:36, 21 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

--Sources: Moving Pictures: "And Mrs Marietta Cosmopilite of 3 Quirm Street, Ankh-Morpork…" Witches Abroad: "Hence, for example, the Way of Mrs Cosmopilite… No. 3 Quirm Street…" Soul Music: "You can get them up at Mrs Cosmopilite's dress shop." Thief of Time: "It is the Way of Mrs Marietta Cosmopilite, 3 Quirm Street, Ankh-Morpork, Rooms For Rent, Very Reasonable." … "…you wish to learn instead the Way of Mrs Cosmopilite?" etc. She's mentioned a lot in that one.

I'll change it to Cosmopilite —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hoerzig (talkcontribs) 09:58, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adora Dearheart

edit

I was just wondering about this line in that section "and by the end of the novel Making Money they were engaged". Dearheart and Moist were engaged before Making Money, it was mentioned when Moist was thinking back to his proposal, where she informed him that she wasn't going to be his wife, but he would be her husband. So it shouldn't really be "by the end", since it occurred before the book. I wasn't sure how to word it, so I just stuck it here to see what you thought. Signed in, that was me BlooLagoo (talk)

Moist von Lipwig entry

edit

The quote "That idiot at the Post Office" can very well refer to Stanley (who, indeed, does not seem to be very bright - or simply lives in his own world) and his passion for stamps (having given up pins), e.g. when he talks to Moist about making a whole set of stamps for the big guilds. Furthermore, on several occasions, it is clear Stanley is willing to (as a result of a sort of printing error on some stamps - possibly induced by magic) have special and rare stamps made for collectors. What do you think about that?

---

You do have a point. However, printing two sets of stamps to deliberately capitalize on the brewing animosity between Dwarfs and Trolls (along with throwing something new out there for the stamp collectors to grab up) seems like just the kind of stunt that Moist would pull. Grabbing space in the paper about it would just be icing on the cake. I don't know if Stanley would register on Vimes' radar, but it bears considering?

Cleaning up.

I have taken it on myself to put these persons in alphabetical order. At least that way it will look better and be easier to use. --Regshoe

The list was in alphabetical order, at least by most people's definition. Last name if known, first name if not. Does it really make it easier to use to have Mr Tulip under M for "Mr"? Daibhid C 12:11, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree, alphabetical by last name makes much more sense. --Chrismith 17:00, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
There are occasions where the last name is not as well known as the first, such as Eskarina Smith (People are far more likely to look under "Esk" than "Smith", and no one's going to look for "Carcer" under "Dun"). I'm going to try a concept and see if it works. If you don't like it, just shift it back. Serendipodous 11:29, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
There. Done. I've also shortened the article a bit by giving the Magpyr family, Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip and General Tacticus their own articles.

Unnecessary entries

edit

(moved from Talk:List of Discworld characters by DJ Clayworth)

This article obviously needs a lot of cleanup. There are a few of these entries that could be made into full articles (albiet small ones, and I'd understand any objections to doing so). But a number of entries here are just plain unnecessary. Achmed the Mad? He's mentioned in a single paragraph in one book and hardly has an effect on the plot. William Scuggins is even less significant. The Monks of Cool, Vincent the Invulnerable...these are just throwaway jokes and have no place in an article such as this. Additionally, there are some prominent characters who are missing. I just finished adding Victor and Ginger, the main characters of Moving Pictures. Eric, from the book of the same name, should probably be mentioned here as well. Unless someone has major objections, I'll probably start doing some cleanup within the next few days. [Edit: I'm referring to the "Discworld characters" page, not the "List of Discworld characters". Lousy misdirects.] --Chrismith 17:18, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree that some of these could probably do with being dropped. I think Achmed is a borderline-case, though; as a parody of a character from another writer and the author of a major grimore, I think he's a bit more than a one-line joke. Daibhid C 16:48, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
A rule of thumb people might want to consider is that if a character's Discworld Companion entry consists of one sentence, this article can probably survive without them. Daibhid C 20:16, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Or if they aren't even in the Discworld Companion. Hmm ... as for Achmed, I don't think he actually appears directly in any of the books, he's just referred to a few times. --Yar Kramer 05:04, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
True, but the same could be said of Bloody Stupid Johnson, and he gets his own article. Daibhid C 20:01, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
BS Johnson is a running joke in the Discworld series, whereas Achmed -- as far as I remember, at least; someone please correct me if I'm wrong -- has only been mentioned in a single book (though the Necrotelicomnicon has been seen in a couple others). Also, BS Johnson's article is slightly over 1500 words. There's obviously a lot that can be said about him and his inventions. What is there to say about Achmed? The few lines present in this article now seem to be pretty much it. Personally, I feel that mention of him in the Necrotelicomnicon section of the concepts article would be enough, since that's really the only thing he's notable for. --Chrismith 21:34, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
You're probably right. Okay, after thinking it over, I think the following sections can probably be dumped. Anyone disagree?
  • Achmed the Mad (with the note about his Lovecraft counterpart added to Minor Discworld concepts#Necrotelecomnicon)
  • Galder Weatherwax (as far as I can see, the only things that makes him more significant than any other pre-Ridcully Archchancellor are his distant relatives and a text error.)
  • Lezek (He's Mort's father, and he's dead. That's about it.)
  • Monks of Cool (although it could form the beginnings of a section in Concepts called "Ramtop Monasteries")
  • Vincent the Invunerable
  • William Scuggins
Daibhid C 13:57, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
That looks fine to me. There are some others that we might be able to do without, too -- Drum Billet doesn't seem overly important, and the entries for the Selachii and Venturi families can probably be dropped. JHC Goatberger also doesn't seem significant, though I don't know how prominently he's referred to in the other books mentioned, so I'll let someone else make that call.
I like the idea of having a "Ramtop Monastaries" section. We've already got the Monks of Cool and the History Monks, and I know that the Listening Monks have been mentioned in a couple books in a fair amount of detail. Mention could also be made of the Way of Mrs. Cosmopolite and the fact that saffron-clad young men leave the Ramtop monastaries to gain wisdom from her. --Chrismith 16:57, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Finally got round to that clean-up. I left Billet, because he's a pretty significent part of Equal Rites, and added some more detail to Goatberger. Daibhid C 15:49, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

In the entry for Casanunda it says that the second fastest thing on the Discworld is the .303 bookworm. Is this really so? Reordering

edit

I've given Moist von Lipwig his own article, in anticipation of Making Money. I've also combined Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip into their own shared article, and done the same for Mort and Ysabell. In what might be a rather unpopular move, I've also relocated all the assassins' biographies to the Ankh-Morpork Assassins' Guild page, in keeping with the Watch biographies on the Ankh-Morpork City Watch page. Serendipodous 17:37, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Seems reasonable to me. I've redirected all the incoming links to these characters (I think!)
Incidentally, maybe Tolliver and Stanley should be at Ankh-Morpork Post Office (which is probably going to be heavily added to after Christmas, anyway)? Daibhid C 14:14, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've moved back Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip. Even if we can say a lot about them, they only appeared in one book and it's highly unlikely they'll appear again. --Infophile (Talk) (Contribs) 13:15, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

There seem to be a few articles that link to nonexistant sections... I'm guessing that they've been turned into their own article without fixing up links. I shall remake the sections as links to the main articles as I feel (when I'm not quite as lazy). Someone can actually fix the links and remove the sections if they wish. Imp y Celin

edit

First, "an admitted reference" sounds like Pterry has admitted doing something wrong by referring to Buddy Holly. I changed that.

Second, "he was last seen working in a fried fish stall in Quirm, a clear reference to Kirsty MacColl's biggest hit" isn't all that accurate, given that Kirsty's biggest hit by far is "Fairytale of New York." Don't believe me? "Chip Shop" only hit #14 in the UK, #9 in Ireland, and didn't chart at all in the US. By contrast, "Fairytale" was #2 in the UK and #1 in Ireland, and charted again three more times in the intervening years, beating "Chip Shop" every time. If you insist on a solo song, her cover of "A New England" was #7. If you're talking about the US rather than the UK, "Walking Down Madison" is her biggest solo hit by far. If you want something she wrote, try "They Don't Know," for which the Tracey Ullman/Paul McCartney version was #2 in the UK and #9 in the US. There are millions more people who know her for singing, "You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot" than for "There's a guy down the chip swop swear's he's Elvis." Although personally I've always liked her best in the Wonderstuff's "Welcome to the Cheap Seats." --75.36.140.83 15:16, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not to mention the fact that the "Elvis seen working at a Burger King" myth has got nothing to do with Kirsty McWhatshernameagain. Kar98 (talk) 01:59, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Gonne

edit

Why is there a section on The Gonne on this page? The Gonne is a weapon, not a character. I've left it in for now as i suppose there may be a more suitable place for that paragraph to be directly transferred to, but it certainly doesn't belong on a page for Discworld characters.

Massive Overhaul

edit

If no one objects within a reasonable time period(I'm thinking two weeks), I'd like to massively overhaul, and in the process, significantly shorten, this article because it seems to me to be too lengthy and unorganized. If you do object, please state why and, if applicable, the exact changes you object to and/or suggest changes to my proposed changes. Proposed changes follow:

  • Make a See Also list at the bottom with all of the Discworld Organizations that also contain character blurbs. I know it's in the Discworld Portal at the bottom already but given the nature of the page, I don't view this repetition as unnecessary or a bad thing. I'll be doing this once at the beginning of the project and adding to it(the See Also list) at the end.
  • Move Technology related characters to the Inventors section of The Discworld technology article, rename that section Technology Related Characters. This includes: Adora Belle Dearheart, Reacher Gilt, Leonard Da Quirm, Sacharissa Cripslock, William De Worde, Wallace Sonky, and Willie Hobson.
  • Reformat Ankh Morpork Article to include subsections under the Institutions sections for Entertainment, Cuisine, Business, Health, Economic(which would be merged with the Currency section already there), Make a new page titled "Ankh Morpork Characters by City Institution" with a See Also Link on the Main Ankh Morpork article section of the appropriate Institution. Blurbs on the Ankh Morpork Characters by City Institution includes: Christine(Entertainment), Dibbler(Cuisine), Doughnut Jimmy(Entertainment), Glenda Sugarbean(Cuisine), Harry King(Business), Lord Snapcase(City Leaders), Lord Winder(City Leaders), Miss Maccalariat(Post Office), JHC Goatberger (Business), Mossy Lawn(Health), Juliet Stollop(Entertainment), Lupine Wonse(City Leadership), Marietta Cosmopilite(Business), Mavolio Bent(Economic), Mr. Wong(Cuisine), Mr. Salzella(Entertainment), Mr. Slant(City Leadership), Olaf Quimby II(City Leadership), Ronald Rust(City Leadership), Drumknott(City Leadership), Seldom Bucket(Entertainment), Stanley Howler(Post Office), General Tacitus(History), Tawnee(Entertainment), Theda Whithel(Entertainment), Tolliver Groat(Post Office), Trevor Likely(Entertainment), Victor Tugelbend(Entertainment), Walter Plinge(Entertainment), Rosie Palm(Entertainment), Carcer(Underclass), Mr. Tulip(Underclass), Mr. Pin(Underclass) and the Canting Crew(Underclass).
  • Work Findthee Swing into the City Watch article, Members section
  • Create a Rincewind Supporting Characters section in the Rincewind article. This includes Cohen, Conina, Evil Harry Dread, Hrun the Barbarian, Lavaeolus, Liessa Dragonlady, The Silver Horde, and TwoFlower.
  • Move Mort and Ysabell to the Death page under Death's Family.
  • Remove all characters that are now elsewhere, organize what's left according to setting (i.e. Omnia, Lancre, Djelibeybi, Moldavia/Borogravia, etc.)
  • Add "See Also"s for all of the new sections that contain character summaries.
  • Rewrite opening to reflect the way character summaries are now organized.

Thoughts? Changes? Ideas?

Mr. Slant

edit

Currently the article says that Mr. Slant is old enough to have been around when most of the laws were written down. It also says that he was decapitated during the reign of Lord Snapcase. However, Vimes, Sgt. Colin and others not only remember when Snapcase was Patrician, they remember Lord Winder, Snapcase's predecessor. Also, If Slant was executed that recently, he'd not have had time to write most of the law books in the average lawyer's office as implied in Making Money. Does anybody have a citation for when Slant became a zombie, or is this speculation?JDZeff (talk) 22:25, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Oxford commas

edit

This article does not use Oxford commas. Whether they aid comprehension is a point about which grammarians argue. One thing is for sure. If you read text out loud, you do not normally pause before co-ordinate conjunctions. However it is a matter of style. Some people like them others don't. If I come across an article that is full of Oxford commas then I leave it alone. If an article has none then I don't add any. It's one of the rules. Don't mess about with the style without reason. Consequentially, if an edit adds a single Oxford comma to an article without them I will remove it. There are some sentences that require an Oxford comma to remove ambiguity. Of course that is not just a stylistic quirk and should be left. However, in those cases the ambiguity is often inherent in the sentence structure and the text should be rewritten. copying the article's four (4) maintenance tags to talk page for editor who does not seem to have noticed them

edit

@OrewaTel:

*This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page. (Learn how and when to remove these template messages)

  • This article may need to be rewritten to comply with Wikipedia's quality standards. (January 2021)
  • This article describes a work or element of fiction in a primarily in-universe style. (April 2012)
  • This article needs additional citations for verification. (September 2020)
  • This article may contain an excessive amount of intricate detail that may interest only a particular audience. (September 2020)

The article has four (4) maintenance tags, which I am trying to address. I am unable to find these "many" spelling errors you speak of, but since you have at least tried to discuss now, albeit in the wrong place, I will AGF and take another look. The last time you did a mass revert of hours of work, I did find a stray letter "d", which and wrote you off as random driveby vandalism... sigh. And what is your objection to the reference for the talking dog??? Elinruby (talk) 05:15, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I presume the reference was in the Gaspode section. There is no problem with this reference other than it isn't useful. (Tag says we need a reference. This is a reference. Put it in.) That is why I have left it there. However there was a spelling error and a semantic error. I have edited the article to remove these since the original editor doesn't seem to care. But I'm not happy with the semantic correction. It needs more work.
As regards the mass revert, I do not have the tools to do that. Instead I had to go through all the edits one at a time to decide if they could be saved. By the time I got to Gaspode, I had seen too much and the first thing I saw was a blatant spelling error then a sentence that was meaningless. Consequently I reverted. I had done too many copy edits. Since spell checkers are the norm, there is little excuse for posting a word such as 'fdr'. All it takes it a quick read through looking for a red mark. Unfortunately after an edit is posted then spell checkers won't look at it unless asked. OrewaTel (talk) 06:47, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Please explain this reversion. I do not see a factual error, nor do I introduce a link. In fact, I have been removing wikilinks of generic terms in this article. The edit removed the explicit note that a Sonky is a condom. It is more accurate to say that he was killed rather than he died in an industrial accident. The inappropriate link was the link in the original that appeared when the edit was reverted. That link went to birth control. I notice the initial sentence has no verb. This is common when there is an implied 'is' as the first word of a section but I would not be offended if a "He is" is added. OrewaTel (talk) 06:21, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I see the edit has been restored without any correction. Rather than get into an edit war, I'll stand back until the tide of edits subsides and then audit the entire article. Twoflower/"Bi-Lily"

edit

The claim that Twoflower's real name is "Billy" (from "Bi-Lily") is uncited. While it's commonly repeated, I haven't found a good source for it - and, in fact, Discworld Annotations claims Terry Pratchett said the opposite, that there's no joke intended in "Twoflower." As such, I suggest that the claim about "Bi-Lily" should be removed unless a reliable source can be cited. DinosaurExplosion (talk) 12:27, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
