Talk:List of England national football team captains

Michael Owen

edit

How many times has he captained England? It must be approaching 10 by now. Robdurbar 11:05, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Criteria

edit

Is this list for starting captains or for captains for any period of time? e.g. When Beckham goes off and gives the armband to Owen/Campbell/Neville - does that count? Either way, it should be stated on the article.

Ray Wilkins/Bryan Robson

edit

As far as I remember Ray Wilkins was originally made captain of both England and Man Utd following Keegan's international retirement and Martin Buchan's deterioration respectively. However in the October Wilkins suffered an injury that kept him out for 6 months and by the time he came back his vice captain for both teams, Robson, had been made permanent captain of both. First captaincy

edit

I'm going to add another column showing the date of the player's first match as captain. The table can be made to be sortable by this criterion using technology (example), but the data has to be in the YYYY-MM-DD format.  Sʟυмgυм • т  c  19:48, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Capello Rotation Section

edit

Is this necessary? It smacks of recentism. It could be better placed in History of the England national football team? --Pretty Green (talk) 18:21, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't believe those who were part of Capello's 'audition' process should be considered official incumbents of the England captaincy. Nottmlad (talk) 04:15, 6 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree with taking it out, but how do we show Terry and other match captains? Should we show Terry as 2006-2007, 2008-2010 and list all the other match captains while Terry was the permanent captain? --Mosmof (talk) 05:07, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Actually, there was a long extended section which I removed (see this edit) which this post refers to. As for the table itself - I think it works as it does; alternatively, take it out and simply don't show the captains from that time (that list is not meant to be comprehensive, but to show any permanent captaincies). --Pretty Green (talk) 09:39, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I didn't notice how old your initial message was! Anyway, I'm in the "If it ain't completely, utterly broken, don't fix it" school. --Mosmof (talk) 04:42, 10 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Recent events have further clouded the issue. It could be said that there isn't currently a permanent captain. I've reverted a few edits to the Post war captains section, leaving it stating that Terry is currently captain, as I don't believe we've been told otherwise! -- slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 21:37, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

New England Captain

edit

It hasn't been confirmed yet, so I have removed that horribly edited section. BoredomJS (talk) 18:38, 11 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Gender

edit

Read this article expecting to see England captains in both men and women’s football. Should the title and content of the entry be more specific? 86.14.121.108 (talk) 21:02, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Missing all the women

edit

None of the women who have captained England are listed in this article. 86.28.126.230 (talk) 19:10, 31 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Article should be split.

edit

I think a men's team article and a woman's team article would be more appropriate. Habat1165 (talk) 16:55, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

As you can see, the last few requests on this page were asking for the women to be included here. Based on those, and what has become STATUSQUO, splitting (and the effort required to) seems unnecessary. If you have technical concerns, however, please give them.
