Talk:List of Final Fantasy XI characters
Notable player characters
editI removed the addition of two FFXI players to this article for not being notable enough for inclusion in a Wikipedia article. I played FFXI from the North American launch up until about a month ago and I have never heard of either of these people. Even if I had I don't think the names of "famous" characters are encyclopedic by nature; that information is more suited to a fansite such as Allakhazam or KillingIfrit. -RaCha'ar 04:47, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. The only PC I could possibly percieve to be of note would be Pikko (of Pikko Pot's fame) but even then that's only from an Alla perspective :P. -- CHANLORD [T]/[C] 05:13, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Cleanup
editI've tagged this article for cleanup for a few reasons.
- The grammar and tone are pretty bad in more than a few sections. Second person needs to be fixed in places, and I also question the awkwardness of "the adventurer" as a replacement for "you," although I confess I'm short on ideas of how to fix it. There's also a lot of awkward phrasing and run-on sentences.
- Some sections are still incomplete. I'll be adding stubs for some of them but some I just don't know enough about.
- A couple of sections are way, way too long for a summary article (Kam'lanaut and Trion in particular). These sections are long enough for their own article and should probably be cut down, IMHO.
- Several sections read like quest summaries, especially Carbuncle; Diabolos, Promathia, Fenrir, and The Shadow Lord are the other culprits I pick out for this. I think there are ways of relating an NPC's importance in the storyline without recapping what's actually done in the game, since that (IMHO, again) comes pretty close to violating Wikipedia is not a game guide.
I'm going to work on the most objective stuff (the grammar and tone) for now, but I'm looking for some opinions about what to do about the last two items on my list. I certainly have my opinions but I'm the last person to say that I'm always right. :) -RaCha'ar 16:30, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Notes
edit- Any objections to my organizing the list by country/storyline, instead of strictly alphabetically? Something like:
- San D'oria
- Bastok
- Windurst
- Jeuno
- Rise of the Zilart
- Chains of Promathia
- Treasures of Aht Urhgan
I'm not sure where characters like the more important summons and Jacoh Wahcondalo would fit; an all-encompassing "Outlands" section to go with the all-encompassing "Outlands" quest category in-game?
- If I break down the characters into storyline as above, I'd like to do sub-sections for characters that appear in groups. This particularly applies to the different nations; along with the notable individual characters, have a section for the Mythril Musketeers, the Ministers of Windurst, and the San D'orian royal family. I'd probably end up grouping the different Kuluu from the CoP storyline too. Characters like Shantotto, Trion, and Nag'molada, who belong to these groups but have their own individual notability within the storyline, would still merit their own separate section, while characters who don't necessarily deserve a section individually can be recognized for their importance as a group. It seems odd to me to have an NPC list that leaves out the Musketeers and all ministers except Ajido-Marujido (and Shantotto absolutely must be in here in any case!)
- I'd like to remove references to game mechanics such as specific ZMs or version updates, to keep this more of a plot description than a game guide, if that makes any sense. -RaCha'ar 17:42, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Please add to this section as issues come up during the cleanup. -RaCha'ar 06:20, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Prince Trion
editWill someone who still plays the game and is more familiar than I am with ToAU characters please give this section some attention and cut it WAY down? We really do not need that much information on one person in a list. Wikipedia is not a game guide. -RaCha'ar 14:39, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Copyright
editI removed a large amount of info taken directly from http://www.shadow-ffxi.com/HistoryofVanadiel/profiles.htm, which is in turn taken from http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/guide/development/vt2/16/re14.html. Please do not copy material from other sources to post to Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:Copyrights. -RaCha'ar 19:55, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Prince Trion, again
editI cut this down myself. A lot of the information was redundant and totally unnecessary. Places like FFXIclopedia are much better repositories for this kind of information than Wikipedia. -RaCha'ar 20:41, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Citing Sources
editThis article lacks references. For an excellent example how to cite sources within this context see List of Final Fantasy X characters. --Pinkkeith 16:22, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Aldo's voice actor?
editI guess this addition refers to the opening FMV? Is it really appropriate to use that infobox here when no other character has one? Couldn't we just mention the actress's name in the body of the article? -RaCha'ar 18:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
FFXIclopedia as a reference?
editI'm going to assume that we can't take other wikis as references for articles here? I don't think citing the ffxiclopedia article on Ajido-Murido is a legitimate cite for proving that he's dual-jobbing. -RaCha'ar 00:39, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Depends on your point of view. in this case (especially since I'M the one who added the citation) I think that its enough proof. If he weren't able to use BOTH Chainspell and Manafont someone would have fixed it by now. I added the citation, my decision stands. --Pandora Xero 07:48, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- I think you're missing the point... we don't allow Wikipedia as a cited reference (ie, if a cited source refers back to Wikipedia as its source, we don't allow it); I was wondering if the same applies to other Wikis. -RaCha'ar 12:11, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- I just found this: WP:RS#Self-published sources (online and paper) Other wikis are not considered reliable sources. I'm going to remove this citation and the assertion that he's dual-jobbed, since there is no way to actually prove it without Square-Enix saying so. His using the 2-hours from both jobs doesn't prove that he's dual-jobbed, necessarily. This is original research. -RaCha'ar 12:19, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Recent manual spellcheck
editPlease, people: use proper spelling and grammar when editing wikipedia. there are bots that correct spelling, but they only stop in so often and are only so accurate.
what was changed/removed:
- apparent trash-talk of President Karst
- apparent partial strategy
- several misspellings of "Mythril Musketeer(s)"
- some misspellings of "Aht Urhgan"
what was NOT changed:
- British English spellings such as "rumour" were left as is
- American English spellings such as "rumor" (if any) were left as is
...i'm not jumping into the EN-GB vs EN-US thing
uncertainties: "Rose Quarterlet" in Ayame's section changed to "Rose Quartet" if this is incorrect please change it back
other comments: Princess Claidie's section sounds complex, and is in drastic need of a clarification in order to make sense. --Pandora Xero 14:26, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Maat
editYet another edit by me: the "pronunciation" of Maat had gone uncited for too long, so i figured i'd put in this character's japanese name, and remove the uncited comment. --Pandora Xero 14:41, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorting by Race
editI was wondering about sorting these characters out by race. I've sorted them all out on paper. I believe if we do it in this fashion many of the characters listings may be condensed down without being removed entirely. For instance, Prince Pieuje d'Oraguille, King Destin R d'Oraguille, Prince Trion, and Princess Claidie are all relation. There is not much listed on any of them. If they were condensed down under a single heading under the heading of the Elvaan race it would take much less room and possibly be of a higher interest. Would any one object to this?
