Example ISBNs

edit

Here are the rules I have attempted to follow in decreasing order of relevance:

  • Only first editions and no translations
  • Prefer native authors
  • Prefer authors with articles to others (if the book itself has an article, even better)
  • Prefer general to specialised book (i.e. no academic monographs)
  • Prefer books in local languages, broadly construed
  • Prefer books with ISBN-10s to book with only ISBN-13
  • Use ISBN with a relatively shorter publisher code

Dutch

edit

94 seems to be the Dutch language (including Dutch-speaking Belgium), rather than just the Netherlands. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1811:2C27:3400:5AB0:35FF:FE81:3641 (talk) 20:35, 22 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

611

edit

There's something very strange going on with this code. It's supposed to be assigned to Thailand, but I find a LOT of Ukrainian books I try to search for it... Circéus (talk) 20:13, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

ISBN 10

edit

France has a new ISBN group 10, which will replace 2. See the website of AFNIL (Agence francophone pour la numérotation internationale du livre) [1] L’apparition du 10 identifie l'AFNIL en tant qu'agence ISBN et se substitue au 2, numéro de groupe francophone. I don't know how you choose the example number, that's why I do not add the information in the list. Traumrune (talk) 13:15, 14 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Invalid ISBN-13 Example

edit

The current ISBN-13 example for Douglas Adams' So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy) is given as 9780330284983, which when validated externally is invalid. The correct ISBN-13 should be 9780330284981 to have the correct check digit. Attempting to correcting this lead to Wikipedia's ISBN validator to announce it as invalid.

Incorrect title?

edit

Why does this article use "identifier group" when the ISBN article and the official ISBN manual uses the term "registration group"? User's Manual, page 11

New list?

edit

Are we going to start making a list of 979-8 publishers as we have done with 978-0 and 978-1??

From the See Also section:

o List of group-0 ISBN publisher codes
o List of group-1 ISBN publisher codes

Just wondering...

France

edit

France is not listed as a country with no exclusive registration group, but the 2- prefix seems to be for the French language, so maybe it should, the same way Germany is listed, although the 3- registration group is mostly Germany. --Muhandes (talk) 13:57, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

There is no prefix exclusive to "France" in the "978-" range, but "979-10-" prefix is registered to "France". ToraNeko (talk) 07:51, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
