Project: Add references
editThis page may or may not be accurate, and it is difficult to tell without references. I was hoping someone or a group of users (myself included) would take the time to add references to the various categories. This morning I addednbnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn some to the passer rating category and used the pro-football-reference.com query utility for obtaining the necessary reference. It isn't that difficult to use once you know how to look the data up. Follow these instructions to get to the query:
- (1) Click on this link: [1]
- (2) Click "Show/Hide Search Form"
- (3) Fill out the information of the record you wish to verify
- (4) Click on "Get Results"
- (5) Click on "Make Tiny URL"
- (6) Add the reference to the main wiki page similar to how I have it set up for the passer rating category. See here: [2]
That particular query is for games (such as # of 100+ passer rating games or any number of other game stats). There are also ways to query seasons and by hovering your mouse over the "Play index" (shown in green on the web site) and select from one of the following categories: Season, Game, Touchdown, as well as other query functions. I hope this tool can be useful for this page. Once the references are set, it ought to be fairly easy to just click on the link to verify any changes to a given record. - How is this effort going? I'm still seeing very few references on any of the records in this list. While the PFR resource is a good one, some of these records (in particular any having to do with streaks, e.g. Brees streak of 50+ 20+ completion games) are simply not verifiable even with the PFR database (at least not in any definitive way). Even using the PFR database may constitute original research. While I love this list, how long are we going to allow it to remain on WP without decent references? — DeeJayK (talk) 20:35, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
- I just completed one pass through this list where I added references for each record that was found in the most recent NFL Record & Fact Book, which is the best "official" source I am aware of. I'll continue to see if other sources are available for the remaining records. — DeeJayK (talk) 18:29, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- I have pretty well exhausted my ability to add further references to this article. I have also mark each unreferenced "record" as such since 2013. At this point it seems as if no one is able or willing to provide references for those, and so I intend to begin striking the unreferenced items from this list. — DeeJayK (talk) 15:07, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Candidates for removal
editAs it stands currently, this list is mostly unreferenced and has been for some time. I've started to go through and add what references I can. As I do so I'm questioning the value of some of these records. For example, Most decades — it's not only unreferenced but it strikes me as a very weak record. To achieve it, a player not only has to have longevity, but his career needs to begin near the end of a decade, which is random.
Others which strike me as similarly weak are the Most games X or more points, career. Again, these are unreferenced but also the point totals are obviously chosen after the fact based on the results and they're very repetitive.
Unless someone wants to try to convince me otherwise, these records are on a short list of ones that I feel should be removed. I intend to add to this list and will document other candidates here. Barring a debate, I intend to remove them once I've gone through the entire list referencing what I can. Thanks! — DeeJayK (talk) 17:17, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
- KEEP It definitely is a bloated, imperfect article, but also absolutely valuable. Just because there are some dubious records doesn't mean the baby has to be thrown out with the bathwater. Bill shannon (talk) 02:38, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
Record Significance
editToo many records shown give credit to players with insufficient attempts to justify their inclusion. For example, the record for most 'perfect passer' games in one season goes to a running back who threw one pass for a TD in three different games. For entries of this nature, it should be noted that the record is for a player with insufficient attempts or the entry should be for qualifiers only [or both]

- Agreed, there should be some kind of baseline for minimum attempts. Bill shannon (talk) 02:39, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- I also agree that some minimum should be used. I believe that the standard cut-off is 20 attempts as discussed in this article on NFL.com. — DeeJayK (talk) 14:44, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
Curly Lambeau ---> First 1,000 yard passer?
editSomeone indicated that Curly Lambeau was the first passer in NFL history to pass for 1,000 yards in an NFL season. The off-line reference indicated was as follows: Maxymuk, John (2007). Strong Arm Tactics: A Historical and Statistical Analysis of the Professional Quarterback. McFarland. However, there is nothing online to collaborate the 1,000 passing yard season. The NFL statistics on PFR.com show Arnie Herber being the first to achieve 1,000 passing yards in 1936. The earliest data available on the site goes back to 1932. Lambeau last played in 1929. I wanted to reference the information I removed here in case someone at a later date can verify that Lambeau did indeed pass for at least 1,000 yards in one of his seasons as a player. Stylteralmaldo (talk) 21:43, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- It's certainly possible, perhaps even likely, that Lambeau was the first to eclipse the 1,000 yard per season mark in the NFL; his Packers teams definitely were on the vanguard of the adoption of the passing game. It's even more likely that Herber was not the first player to pass that milestone. A Google book search of Strong Arm Tactics on page 83 reveals the passage you mention: "Once more the passing leaders hailed from Wisconsin with Lambeau becoming the first player to exceed !,000 yards per season" (I assume the ! is simply an artifact of the book scanning process). Unfortunately, there's not enough context provided online for me to determine in which year this occurred; one would probably have to track down the book to verify that information. This same book also states that Lambeau had 4,493 career passing yards while also noting that "pre-1933 numbers...are incomplete and suspect." It's this last part that makes it problematic to assert that any particular player was the first to any particular league or team statistical achievement. The unofficial nature of pre-1933 stats is further established when it is noted in this same reference that Herber was the first to "officially" eclipse the 1,000 yard mark in a season (unfortunately, I'm unable to find this passage again). This book seems like a reliable enough source to cite if you want to add something about Lambeau's achievement, but I think you would definitely want to include a caveat about the unofficial nature of the statistics. — DeeJayK (talk) 16:01, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
- I've updated the stat including the ref you listed. Thanks! Stylteralmaldo (talk) 18:25, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- I've added a note to this and all pre-1932 "records" to note that they are unofficial, since official statistics were first kept in 1932. If I've missed any, please feel free to add this note to other records as appropriate. — DeeJayK (talk) 19:51, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- I've updated the stat including the ref you listed. Thanks! Stylteralmaldo (talk) 18:25, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
Most blocked kicks
editThe current entry in the Miscellaneous section for most blocked kicks/pats/punts lists Ted Hendricks with 25. However, according to his Pro Football Hall of Fame bio, Alan Page (http://www.profootballhof.com/players/alan-page/) is credited with 28 blocked kicks. I tried searching, but did not find definitive list of players with the most blocked kicks, so there may be other players with even more. Kalendraf 17:00, 4 February 2016 (CST)
Single Decade Records
editI think that we should reconsider what it being done with the "Records in a Singe Decade" section. Just as "Records in a Single Month" are left to a specific month, and don't combine October and November weeks for example, these are left to specific decades, such as the 80's, 90's, and 00's, and don't go into two different decades, with such runs as 1996-2005.Tapper930 (talk) 00:33, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- I say remove the whole section. It's unsourced. Lizard (talk) 17:39, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Hidden {{Citation needed}}s
editThere shouldn't be any of these hidden. Either remove them if a citation has been provided, or leave them. Jerod Lycett (talk) 23:00, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Playoff-specific career passing
editThere are a number of playoff-specifc passing records included that were added recently. Since playoff stats aren't considered part of "career stats" and because these stats exist on the page only for passing and not for any other stat categories, I intend to remove them, unless someone knows why they should be included. Bloat
editThis page is so full of links that my computer crawls to a halt trying to make even simple changes with the WYSIWYG editor. Part of the problem, I think, is the excessive repetition of links. (Do we really need to link to the same players multiple times in a single section?) Samer (talk) 06:16, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
