Discussion on merging the player pages
editI had an idea that I want to propose. Right now, there is a List of current NHL players and a List of retired NHL players. Neither of which are very complete. A very ambitious user by the name of Kevin Rector has created a list of every NHL player. By his own admission, it might be missing a few, but I haven't seen any missing players. His list does need some work as there are a few bad links, but nothing to cry home about. I have fixed a dozen or more bad links and I see that other people have too. His list can be found here: User:Kevin Rector/List Every NHL Player Ever.
Now, this is my idea: Simply remove the List of current NHL players and List of retired NHL players. Put redirects for them to List of NHL players. On that page, there will be a link to Kevin Rector's article and a list of players by team (as well as the Hall of Fame pages). I have worked hard at creating lists of NHL players by team and that coupled with Kevin Rector's list makes the other two lists redundant. Also, I have noticed that the List of current NHL players is not very accurate. It is not accurate for two reasons.
- It lists the current team that the player is playing for and in many cases, players have moved on and that list wasn't updated.
- Players can fall into three categories. Category one: active and still playing. Category two: in the minors and not playing in the NHL but not retired either. Category three: Retired players. Having a list of current NHL players is too difficult to keep updated and accurate. Where do you put players who are in the minors but aren't retired? You can't put them on the current player list and you can't put them on the retired list. It makes much more sense for each NHL team to have a current roster on the team's main page (which many teams have). Adding a current roster to all of the teams is on my to-do list, but I am waiting for the NHL season to begin before doing that (that way I can use a web site such as tsn.ca to get an accurate list of current players).
In the past, I have merged pages without discussing first (such as regular season/ offseason/season (sport) and I created a National Hockey League rivalries page that merged the Bruins-Canadiens Rivalry with the Battle of Alberta as well as many other mergers) but all of the mergers I have done were either minor or no-brainers. This merger that I am proposing now is (in my opinion) a fairly major one and I want to hear people's thoughts on it. This is not a vote. It is a simple discussion to see if we can come to an agreement. Masterhatch 16 August 2005
- It seems like a no-brainer here; there needs to be a single list, and in a league not only with several hundred players but the whole minor leagues, maintaining "current" and "retired" lists would be full-time work -- heck, I know some still active minor leaguers or European players whose NHL experience was a game or two a decade ago, are they "retired" from the NHL? No one seems to object
editNo one seems to object to a merger. Over the next few days, I will get around to merging the pages. It will take a few hours of cross-checking links for the players and stuff like that, but I will get it done. Masterhatch 19 August 2005
- I have now merged the current NHL list of players with Kevin Rector's list and fixed the links. I have yet to do the Retired players, but I will get around to that soon (it's tedious work checking links). Masterhatch 22 August 2005
- Done. I spent a Sunday afternoon and took care of the retired players list and made a List of every NHL player. Masterhatch 27 August 2005
My List
editThe list I created was designed as a reference for myself as I worked on Hockey articles. If you want to move the list out of my User Space and into the article space that would be fine with me. However, the user space article should not be linked from the article space. Kevin Rector (talk) 17:45, August 23, 2005 (UTC)
- So, you would have no problem if I moved the lists? If you have no problems with the lists being moved, I can do that. Masterhatch 25 August 2005
Shouldn't this be a Lists of category page since there are no actual people and just a list of lists? 216.84.45.194 22:10, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
