Country of birth or international competition

edit

Should the flag for Steve Smith be removed or the top section corrected? Steve Smith played for Canada while the top section says it should indicate the country played for in international competition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.119.19.211 (talk) 02:39, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not certain. GoodDay (talk) 20:53, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I removed them all per MOS:ICON: there is no reason to put flag icons in this article. The origin of the players has nothing to do with their penalty minutes in the NHL, and they are not representing their birth countries in any way.--137.122.49.102 (talk) 17:30, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
MOS:ICON says not to use flags when they're not relevant. Nationality of sports figures is relevant even when they're not representing their country. (Think of tennis.) The NHL certainly considers it relevant: on the NHL's main webpage for hockey players' statistics, the search criteria are "Year," "Season," "Team," "Position," "Country," "Status" (e.g., rookie), and "Report" (e.g., assists). For these reasons, I'm restoring the flags.
The NHL uses country of birth, and regardless of anything MOS:ICON says, it is by far most convenient for us to follow the NHL's conventions, since the NHL provides the official sources for statistics. This is true even though the NHL may not have made the most sensible choice. 216.239.65.196 (talk) 03:07, 20 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I undid your revision, as the manual of style is quite clear on the use of flag icons. Note that while it is a search option in the table you linked to, the country of birth and or its flag does not appear in the table at all. If country of birth is relevant here, what should be done to follow the manual of style is to add a column with "country of birth" where the full name of the country (with or without flag icon) would appear. To have a flag icon for non-Canadian athletes next to the name is giving undue visual weight to a few players without properly conveying information.--70.80.234.196 (talk) 14:18, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I am the same person as 216 above. Just to clarify, are you the same person as 137? 216.239.65.127 (talk) 04:21, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Active NHL Seasons

edit

I think it would be useful to include the seasons during which each player was/is active in the NHL. This is readily available information, and I'm willing to do the work to add it. Brad Hughes (talk) 02:33, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
