What should be considered as Nigerian scientist and scholars?

edit

What is a scientist or scholar? Somebody exclusively in government or commerce should not be considered. Where to draw the line? One criterion is the necessity of somebody to have appeared in scientific literature and somewhat built up a career. Soyinka and Achebe might not fulfill that requirement, but they are recognized as scholars who speak or spoke with authority.

What is a Nigerian scientist? Only those born and working in Nigeria? Those born elsewhere but now working in Nigeria? There are a number of cases of Nigerians who grew up abroad and stayed abroad. Should these be on the list?

No response on this question except the decision later to remove Achebe and Soyinka. For the time being, let it be a Nigerian who has been for some time at an institution for higher learning in Nigeria, and has contributed to scientific literature in that period.

Checking the authors with an affiliation as a Nigerian university in the top 100 of number of publications there are only a handful mentioned in this list of scholars. The top 5 are O. Gureje, G. Oboh, E.O. Farombi, A. Sowunmi and S. Misra. These have no Wikipedia pages.

Merge with Category of Nigerian Scientists?

edit

Better to let this page disappear and add all present names to category of Nigerian Scientists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pjtverheijen (talkcontribs) 18:27, 3 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you, Pjtverheijen, but it'll never happen. Try taking it to WP:AFD and you'll get a taste of the unreasoning love of lists in this place. Lists just aren't deleted, and if by a fluke they should be, they're soon recreated. Bishonen | talk 14:49, 28 April 2016 (UTC).Reply

Chinua Achebe

edit

I'm a great admirer of Chinua Achebe, but why is he in this list? His notability is as a writer, and he is (of course) listed in List of Nigerian writers. Was he a notable scientist/scholar as well? I don't get that from our article Chinua Achebe. Bishonen | talk 14:45, 28 April 2016 (UTC).Reply

PS, I see an unsigned and undated statement above that Achebe and Soyinka (I didn't realize Soyinka was listed too), even though they didn't have a scientific career, "are recognized as scholars who speak or spoke with authority". Of course they speak with authority, but that comes from their eminence as writers. Not every authority is a scientist or scholar. I think they should be removed from this list. No objection since forever. I've removed them. Bishonen | talk 12:18, 9 March 2017 (UTC).Reply

May I ask how to go about indicating that a person on the List of living persons had died? Openworks (talk) 04:16, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
