awards, ribbons and such

Unless we have a Reliable Source that notes what the ribbons on their chest means, I am having huge problems with us presenting them from an observational point of view by a random editor.
As well, I feel that the assignment of these ribbons and medals for a fictional character is somewhat demeaning to those real life men and women who have earned them, not have them written jsut added to a character. I'm thinking I will wait about 2 weeks to allow those with a real interest in the subject to attribute each of these awards to an explicit, reliable source.
