Periodisation
editIs a problem. Having periods such as Russian period with composers that lived in Austo-Hungary, or Soviet period with composers living in the Werst and in Poland is not very goo.
Better to use
Modernist for post revolutionary composers Post meodernist for those that are post 1991. I'll look into my Ukrainian culturology textbooks for the definitions of the previous periods.
Ivasiuk, although he wrote some pop-songs also wrote string qwaurtets and was working on an opera. There is a difference between a songwriter and a composer. Bandurist (talk) 20:49, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- I agree that the "Russian" and "Soviet" periods might not fit every single composer in the list, but these are just historic periods of Ukraine and a list of composers that fit into that time frame. Also, those periods (such as "Soviet Period") are much more easy to understand for someone that is not very familiar with Ukrainian history than the more correct ones ("Post-Revolutionary Period"). (To make the connection someone would first have to look up the history of Ukraine, find out about the 1917 Revolution, and then understand what historical period those omposers actually represent). --BoguslavM 20:35, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Catagorization
editMaybe we need to differentiate between ethnicly Ukrainian composers and composers who were born, lived and created in Ukraine. This is a question which is bring brought up currently in Ukrainian scholarship.
Composers such as Bortniansky and Berezovsky were of Ukrainian ethnic origin, however they created all their compositions outside of Ukraine for non Ukrainians.
Others, such as Roman Hurko were born and live outside of Ukraine, and are of Ukrainian ethnic origin and write Ukrainian music.
Then there are composers such as Prokofiev who was ethnically Russian, who happened to be born on what is currently Ukrainian territory but lived most of his life outside of Ukraine and did not compose Ukrainian music. There are many more like him.

I'm not sure what you mean by categorization. This is simply a list of composers who somehow have their roots in Ukraine. I don't see a big difference if the pope, the Russian King, the Orthodox church, some university, or just concerts in Ukrainian villages paid the guy's bills, if he (or she) was from Ukraine then he belongs in this list. --BoguslavM 20:24, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Prokofiev
editAm I missing something obvious about Prokofiev not being included in this list? He grew up in Sontsivka, Ukraine. 209.195.84.22 (talk) 19:49, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
