Military occupations

edit

US history as a colonial power is fairly limited, when compared to European colonial empires. However, adding military occupations to this list is misleading.

The article header specifically states that this article will ignore such temporary holdings. Further, colonialism and military occupation are not synonymous. Additionally, some past edits include places that may not be defined as occupations, such as South Korea. Japan, Germany, and Iraq clearly were occupations after a military action. But at no time was there the intent to colonize these lands. I believe intent should be relevant.

Understandably, arguments can be made they are both part of imperialism. I have no intention of taking either side, nor should this article if it is to remain neutral.

A separate section of temporary military occupations is a reasonable compromise. But it should be clear they are not colonies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.215.148.242 (talkcontribs) 15:43, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have redirected List of United States colonial possessions to Territories of the United States, as the information contained in its tables is found on the target page; also, there are numerous other pages with similar titles that redirect to that page. Drdpw (talk) 17:55, 4 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
