Talk:List of Urusei Yatsura characters

Kintaroo

edit

The Kintaroo character, appearing in one of the first episodes of the anime, is missing from the list. He is the child wearing a golden KIN/kane character on his red piece of garment, riding a flying bear. Perhaps also based on Momotaroo from Japanese folklore (like Ten?). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.37.194.20 (talk) 15:02, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ten

edit

It says that Ten's real name is Jariten. I don't think so (wow that was blunt). Jari means little pebbles in Japanese. By Ataru calling Ten "Jariten", he's implying that Ten's little, worthless, etc. Peaceman 03:09, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, his real name is 'Jariten'; the AnimEigo liner notes explain it in the same way when he is introduced, and speculate on the reason for the name. This may be partly why he is usually called 'Ten'. Also, it's a pun on how he initially arrives ("little pebbles from Heaven"). And he is, physically, the smallest member of the main cast, after all. It may also suggest an incomplete understanding of the Japanese language by the Oni who are, after all, aliens in this series.--David Breakey 14:56, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
hmm...okay. But then again, Onis other than Lum, her dad, etc. all call him "Ten-bocchan" which basically means young sir Ten. But, I'm not the authority here, so I believe you. Peaceman 03:47, 25 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Strange. I had always learned that "Jariten" (meaning something like "bratty Ten") was a nickname that the boys of Tomobiki had coined for him. Evidence of this can be seen in the episode where Lum and Ten get drunk off pickled plums. A drunken Lum asks Mendou where Ataru is. Mendou replies "he's off chasing Jari--i mean Ten!", as if he didn't want her to hear him use the nickname.
Yeah, his full given name is "Jariten". Knowing Takahashi, she was making at least one joke by naming him that way. ^_^ --nihon 07:30, 3 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

No, his name can't be "Jariten". It's a nickname. If you say "Jariten!", you mean "Ten, you BRAT!". --163.139.215.193 15:57, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

That is, indeed, correct; however, this is Rumiko Takahashi we're talking about here. She's known for truly horrendous puns. Besides, that would still fit the character, if you think about it. --David Breakey 20:40, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jariten is indeed this character's full name. Sometimes when we see Lum's parents at home on the Oni Planet discussing him, he is referred to as "Jariten." Zubenelgenubi 22:41, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oosaka accent?

edit

Is it true that Ten has a heavy Oosaka accent/intonation, as I read on fanzine? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.37.194.20 (talk) 15:04, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Deleting Content?

edit

I added a lot of additional character detail to this article. Can anyone tell me why it was removed? 21:58, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Discussion

The one responsible deleted the English voice actors for many of the characters despite them being correct! --Ryanasaurus0077 13:27, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I agree with my "twin brother"! --Ryanasaurus007 01:12, 17 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Thank you for locking the page. It's been needed for awhile. The issue seems to be a particular individual with a very unprofessional attitude. (Just read his comments on the history page and this page. "Twin Brother" indeed.) Voice actor details are of limited usefulness to most readers, yet he keeps removing large amounts of character detail while adding in what he wants in the article. This article is not just about the Urusei Yattsura anime series, but also the manga (which doesn't have voice actors). Nevertheless, I have no problem with voice actor information in the article, as long as other content is not deleted when that information is inserted. Consensus decision

edit

Current content of the article (as it was at the time it was locked) will be retained. Additional details about the various voice actors who played the characters on television will be added in without deleting or modifying the current content. Zubenelgenubi 06:05, 23 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate info/info migration

edit

Many of the characters have their own pages and the information on them in this page is a summary of that info. Is there still a need for these summaries even though the characters have their pages linked to, as the reader is essentially reading the same things twice. Information re. characters who don't have their own pages can stay here as it is.

Also, it seems that all the voice actor info would be more relevant on the character pages instead of being mentioned here. Why not migrate VA info missing from those pages from here to there and then eliminate all VA info for characters on here who already have their own pages? --BrokenSphere 21:24, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I think that most readers will not go to the individual character pages, but will use this page as a summary, as intended. If someone does want to visit an individual character page, there is plenty of additional information on all of them that this page really isn't all that redundant. As far as voice actor information is concerned, I agree in principle. However, Ryanasaurus will likely disagree... Zubenelgenubi 07:13, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Started on this. So anyone who already has their own page will have their VA info from here migrated there. For everyone else, I moved that info around to read last because to me it's very distracting to try and read a character description and have to sort through x number of VAs first. Where a particular VA is unknown, I deleted that because as of now that info doesn't exist and is also distracting. --BrokenSphere 20:51, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Inspiration Behind Character Design

edit

Would it be appropriate for the article to talk about the inspiration behind some of Rumiko Takahashi's designs? For example, multiple sources (one noted below) state Lum's inspiration as Agnes Lum.
