Table

edit

I just formatted the text by using a wikitable. This is mostly dony by search & replace and sed with some decent manual work. Some "#" are replaced by literal numbers.

Dear co-author, Please review all entries you've made. Especially some quoted titles should be replaced by italics. I think I've done the formatting well, but – as I haven't read all the text word by word – I can't guarantee that all is perfectly done.

Valuable Article

edit

This is a wonderful article with little-known information, with a sincere effort at accuracy, and with large implications for technology, privacy, and security. It reflects well on Wikipedia.

How did I find this article? I read a dispute on a user talk page. This suggests this list is too hard to find in the Wikipedia, and, as a courtesy to all readers, it suggests the page needs to be cross-referenced on other pages about CD technology and formatting issues.

Let me toss out just a small comment about technology in this area. Optical (and magnetic) disks cannot be perfectly rotated in disk players, and the unwanted variations in vertical height and radial centering must be detected electronically. The electronic height signals feed into servo control systems for focus of the laser head (the read/write head) and the radial (de-)centering signals feed into another servo control system to achieve more perfect tracking of the "record grove" or string of data pits being read. At one point in the history of this area broadly viewed, a manufacturer purposely decentered the data tracks and used the radial servo control signal as a covert (encrypted) signal for establishing copy protection.

Sometimes individuals do these things, sometimes it is "the marketplace". Sometimes we see reaching for freedom of self-expression and sometimes we see attempts to control others. When actions are intended to be covert, references will be harder to find.

The present article takes its place in a long and colorful history of hidden exploits and (partially-) secret data in some of the most mundane of everyday objects. Gems like these are what we all love about Wikipedia. Jerry-VA (talk) 14:21, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Can some wikipedian please change Sarah Masen's link to Dreamlife of Angels. It links to some movie. I'm scared to do it in case my edit is deemed "unencyclopedic" as usual. I just post on talk pages to have edits made. Since you guys are so particular about what edits get done, you can just do them yourselves. Peace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.111.184.86 (talk) 20:08, 13 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Pennywise - Unknown Road seems to have no hidden pregap Track

edit

I just checked my version and there is no hidden track in the pregap. According to the Wikipedia page of the album, the track is a hidden after track 13. Of course I can't tell if there were different pressings. If there were it would be great to address, which pressings had the track hidden in the pregap, or just remove the album, if it was a misstake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:D2:171D:55BD:6100:910D:C2AE:3DDB (talk) 09:49, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

"First track?"

edit

Pre-gap tracks can be in positions other than the first track. In these instances a regular playthrough of the album will play the track (i.e. it's not truly hidden, as a pre-gap 00 track would be) but if you navigate to any given track, a song hidden in the pre-gap will not play. Furthermore depending on CD-ripping equipment it may not be possible to rip a track hidden in the pre-gap prior to any given track (I encountered this when first ripping Blink-182's self-titled album - the spoken word part before Stockholm Syndrome didn't make it to MP3)

A few items in the table are in positions other than track 00, so would suggest the list heading removes "of the first track" and just leaves the pre-gap comment in - I don't think it widens the scope too much and it aligns it with the article title more. additional CDs with pregaps

edit

i was using EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to rip my CDs and found that the program highlights the first track in red to note the presence of a pregap.
