Talk:List of ancient Greek poets

A note on the capitalization of the title of this list

edit

Other lists involving ancient Greeks don't capitalize the "A". But this is a list of poets in the "Ancient Greek" language, so the "A" should be capitalized as part of the proper name of that distinct language. "List of ancient Greek poets", the page where this list originally started, is now a redirect page. Noroton 17:26, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ideas for future improvements to this list

edit

Anyone with an interest in the topic should look over this page for improvements. I have no lasting interest in the subject and don't intend to monitor it for long.

Rather than a simple list of names (which I took by cutting and pasting Category:Ancient Greek poets) I added information about years, type of writer and location, taken from the top lines of each article, although that process isn't done yet.

Ideally, the description of each poet should be uniform in style. Currently there is no uniformity (for instance, sometimes the years of the poet is after information about what type of poetry the poet wrote and sometimes after the place the poet was associated with). I didn't make these uniform because I'm not sure what order would be best. The differences reflect the top lines of each article.

Perhaps the poets' years should be linked, perhaps not. Perhaps the place names should be linked, perhaps not. I've done it both ways. Wikipedia style is generally to have no more than one link per line; but on this list, that decision should be made on the basis of what would be most useful to readers. It's a question I'm not comfortable in making. Some editor should Be Bold and WP:IAR if there is good reason, but only an editor who has a very good feel for the subject and what the needs of readers of this list are likely to find useful.
