Missing Companies That are considered "Ballet" - may include modern dance
edit- Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation
- Mark Morris Dance Group
- Paul Taylor Dance Foundation
An Encyclopedia needs to include references to notable organizations that may no longer exist
editWhile not a history book, it is often instructive to include organizations that have had a notable impact on the evolution of a subject so future generations can learn from their failures.
For example: The Harkness Ballet was a notable international ballet company (with accompanying ballet school) that was in existence for over 10 years in the 1960's and 1970's. Members of the company moved on to become leaders in American Ballet. Dancers like Lawrence Rhodes & Helgi Tomasson became Artistic Directors of some of the largest ballet companies in the world. Others became prominent teachers whose efforts have radically expanded the skill set of ballet dancers.
Another example: The various Ballet Russe companies toured the Americas and were the inspiration for the growth of local and regional ballet in the Western Hemisphere.
