Is there a way of deciding what name a brewery is listed under? For instance the Diamond Brewery in Newbury was the Diamond Brewery for 2 years (1897-99) before which it spent 60 or so years as Flint's. It is listed here as Diamond.

The 'Walegrave Place one mentioned at the top (Newbury, 1763) is from an entry that doesn't appear properly (not sure how to fix it) for Haskin's Brewery. Haskins at that date (I would need to check) was probably at the Kings Arms in the Market Place - which did have a brewery. Walegrave (assuming this to be Waldegrave) Place as a name didn't appear in Newbury until 1878!

One or two obvious omissions:

The Newbury Brewery Co (16xx-1930) taken over by H & G Simonds - one of the two big Newbury breweries

South Berkshire Brewery (1896-1920) formed by the amalgamation of Hawkins' West Mills Brewery (the other big Newbury brewery) and Parfitt's Atlas Brewery - it is here taking over the 'St Nicholas' Brewery (usually Westcombe's) and the Pineapple Brewery. It should obviously have an entry of it's own - and it could be noted that it also took over the Diamond Brewery and Bridge Brewery in Newbury and at least one Reading brewery. Taken over itself in 1920, by H&G Simonds.

Donnington Brewery - no prizes for guessing which village that was in.

there are also a number of small Newbury breweries missing, generally speaking the Victorian equivalent of brewpubs - the Pocock's (Bacon Arms), Reynolds (Greyhound), Skinners (Kings Arms - bought by Flint's) and others.

Other points - Morland's started in West Ilsley, which is still in Berkshire (as is Abingdon in my book!) The Eagle Brewery and Adnams are the same brewery aka Speenhamland Brewery (before Adnams it was Gales). Newburychap (talk) 18:12, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Context needed

I think this article needs a bit of context about what it means by a brewery. To me, unless stated otherwise, a brewery is a place that makes beer, and breweries are owned by brewing companies. But this article seems to be written from the perspective that a brewery is a company or organisation. The article brewery is ambiguous on this, so I think this article needs to say what it means. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 11:24, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
