All M- numbers
editIt appears that M- numbers were assigned to all routes, even the NYCO routes with their own numbering. I bet these were franchise numbers assigned by the city, assigned roughly in order of bustitution. The Fifth Avenue Coach Company, which got approval through the state legislature rather than the city, did not have these numbers. The routes were still using the old numbers in 1971, unless the New York Times was slow to change: [1] --NE2 13:22, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Here's a good question
editIf the Fifth and Madison Avenue Lines were not combined until 1966, what was the Madison Avenue Line's designation from 1962 to 1966? M23, M24, and M25 were free; is there a reason all three were left alone? [3][4] implies that it may have been the M23 or M25. --NE2 18:36, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- There were only two routes running along Madison prior to 1966: 1 and 2 (both under franchise M-25). When the conversions of Fifth and Madison were implemented, both lines' southbound routes were moved to Fifth (the 1 from 135th to 40th Streets, the 2 from 116th to 8th Streets); while of the old FACCo network's routes along Fifth, all but one (the Fifth Avenue-Riverside Drive-Broadway #5 route whose NB route was shifted to Avenue of the Americas a.k.a. Sixth Avenue below 57th Street) had their northbound path moved to Madison - the 2 (because they and the ex-NYCO route shared the same number, thus leading to much confusion, FACCo's 2 became 2A in the latter part of '66 up to 1974), 3, 4 and 15 (later M32, now Q32). There was no "combination" per se, one avenue's opposite direction path was moved to the other avenue.
- The "M-23" designation was for what NYCO operated as 5 - Sixth Avenue, which after 1963 was folded into the 6 - Broadway-Seventh-Sixth Avenues route (original unused franchise designation "M-22"); "M-24" was for NYCO's 8/9 routes which, after 1954, were discontinued upon 10 - Eighth Avenue/Central Park West's SB route being shifted to Broadway and Seventh Avenue.
- By the time of the Fifth and Madison one-way conversions, MaBSTOA had assumed operation of all FACCo, NYCO and Surface Transit routes, thus all of the original franchise numbers effectively went out the window and what was actually used by NYCO in particular, became the standard. –Wbwn (talk) 04:36, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
