List is almost empty
editThis list is quite embarrassingly empty, given there are thousands of cemeteries in Australia. Probably the most comprehensive online lists of Australian Cemeteries that genealogists use (and contribute to) can be found here:
so I've updated the article to include both as external links. If we can't provide the info on WP, at least we can point the reader in the right direction. The Category:Cemeteries in Australia is also very sparsely populated. I am not sure if it worthwhile to try to play catch-up with the websites mentioned above, although I guess if we can catch up this list, then maintaining it won't be too hard (there aren't that many new cemeteries created these days).
Is the purpose of this list to include:
- all Australian cemeteries with a WP article (i.e. each entry would have a linked article)?
- all Australian cemeteries mentioned in WP articles (i.e. each entry would link to some article)?
- all Australian cemeteries even if not mentioned in WP?
Part of my concern is that many cemeteries may lack notability. I am not sure what the criteria for notability would be for a cemetery. I am guessing a very historic cemetery or one with many notable people buried there might be notable, but that many smaller cemeteries with few (if any) notable people buried there might not rate a WP article. Cemeteries do get mentioned in other articles, mainly those that deal with the town/suburb/district/church where the cemetery is located or for articles on people buried there.
And there are many small and private cemeteries as well as lone graves and memorials not connected with graves. How small does a cemetery have to be before it falls below the threshold of being worthy of mention? And then there's the crematoriums, collumbarium walls, etc? Where does it all end?
I am wondering if the best solution might be to limit this list to Australia cemeteries/crematoriums with WP articles and then point at the external links for more complete lists. Note the first external link can be navigated by state so we could put the appropriate external links at the end of each subsection for each state in this article.
