What is the scope of this list?
editJust got a quick question about this article. Is this meant to be a list of all the cemeteries in New Zealand, or just a list of notable ones? There are hundreds of cemeteries in New Zealand, most of which could be verified by local authority web sites, but most of them wouldn't really be notable enough for their own articles. - I don't see why this shouldn't be comprehensive, so long as references can be found. We should not redlink cemeteries that are unlikely to be sufficiently notable to have their own articles. A few additional details for each cemetery would be good, eg dates of operation.-gadfium 18:54, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
- Have done a quick list of the southern corner of the South Island as an example and will see whether it passes muster. As all the data is from Council web sites I've added one entry per Council, linked to the Council article (or closest approximation) so as not to have a red link, and just listed the cemeteries in fairly much the order in which they appear on the Council pages (some are categorised, some aren't). - The first line of this article says it contains a list of "some of the more notable" cemeteries in New Zealand. For me, this introduction raises several issues. First is notability; if one of the criteria for notability is finding a reference, then the death notices in New Zealand newspapers would probably mention every cemetery in New Zealand, over time. Also, the New Zealand Society of Genealogists has transcribed every surviving headstone in New Zealand that they could find and in so doing have documented all the cemeteries too. Also, those who manage cemeteries are obliged to hold a public register of burials and many of these are on-line.
- My second issue is with determining which cemeteries are the more notable ones. How does one rank notability? If additional inclusion criteria are used then these should be stated, i.e. land area, grave count, historic place, war graves, population centre, etc. Even the word cemetery is an inclusion criterion. Under New Zealand law, cemeteries are open for public burials, while denominational and other burial grounds are restricted to members of a particular group or belief. Restricting the article to just cemeteries could also exclude urupa and memorial parks or gardens where only cremation ashes are interred or scattered.
- Finally, "some of" suggests unstated exclusion criteria also apply. What should really be said is that this list is incomplete. Inclusion on the list should be for any place where the dead are buried or their ashes interred and monuments erected to those individuals. This should cover cemeteries, burial grounds, church graveyards, urupa and the like but exclude war memorials, etc. Cameron Dewe (talk) 19:28, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

More than just a list
editI believe that this article could be more than just a List of Cemeteries in New Zealand. Perhaps it could also cover who manages cemeteries, types of cemeteries, legislation, access to registers of burials, how to find a cemetery, importance to historians and cultural significance, etc. What do others think? - Cameron Dewe (talk) 19:30, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
List organisation
editSince most cemeteries in New Zealand are managed by local councils, it makes sense to group cemeteries by council area, not just geographic region. While Auckland is one population centre with a single (super city) council. Other places are more fragmented. For example Greater Wellington has 4 cities and several smaller districts in the region, while Greater Christchurch includes Christchurch city as well as the two adjoining district councils that stretch from the Southern Alps to the Pacific coast. Also, many local councils have an on-line database, or at least a common webpage, that covers all the cemeteries they manage. So organising by council would mean just one reference to each website or database, rather than having multiple common references if each cemetery is identified separately. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 21:05, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
