Older serials?
editI am currently trying to find a home for this list of chess periodicals listed here. How do people feel about relaxing the inclusion criteria to include serials that are defunct? John Vandenberg 06:15, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think the list should ever have been limited to current publications. We could create a new section for periodicals that are no longer published, or we could put everything into a table with start and end date columns. (The class="sortable" table would allow that to be sorted to put all the current publications together.) Quale 11:34, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- John, thanks for letting me know. Initially, when I drafted this chart, I put in starting and ending dates, but I found that most of the chess periodicals I knew about were current, so I arbitrarily decided to limit it to current publications. As Quale wisely points out, there is no reason to impose such an arbitrary limitation. I would recommend creating a separate table for defunct periodicals and serials, but the idea to add an end-date column to the current table is also fine. I'm happy to see that other editors are expanding on the work that I began. Good luck. Shalom Hello 14:49, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- I should have worded my comment differently, as it wasn't meant to be a criticism. The list of current periodicals is very good, and we work with the information we have at hand. Expanding the article to include defunct publications would be good, but requires more research. We can do it incrementally in the finest WikiPedia tradition. Quale 15:17, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I have started typing up the list at s:Contribution to a Bibliography of Chess Periodicals. John Vandenberg 16:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

editis Shakhmaty v SSSR still published? What about Chess Express, that was around in the early 1970s at least. Bubba73 (talk), 13:48, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Also, Chess Review is no longer being published. Bubba73 (talk), 13:51, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Shakhmaty v SSSR is defunct, as noted. Also sadly gone are 'Shakhmaty Riga' and 'Shakhmaty'. All three were published monthly. I recall that both my postman and my security officer were decidedly unamused when these four were added to my long-standing subscription to '64'. Lots of great material for us postalites {grin}. Chess Review was rolled into 'Chess Life', IIRC. Don't have a copy to hand, but the masthead carried the date that they became the official organ (lower digestive {grin}) of the USCF. Table format
editAfter adding some journals, I feel the table format is far too restricting. They are a lot of minor chess magazines that don't warrant a whole article, but for which it would be nice to say a few words about. Does anyone object formatting this article similar to List of chess terms? Voorlandt (talk) 21:29, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. I don't see much need for the sorting that the table provides. It would be good to be able to have a little bit of text about them. Bubba73 (talk), 00:02, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Columbia Chess Chronicle
editI couldn't find it in the Library of Congress or (ironically) in the Columbia University online catalogs, but the University of Wisconsin-Madison says it has a few issues. It seems that it probably had a five year run starting in 1887 and ending in 1891. http://madcat.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=7131878

Italics
editShouldn't the table in this article italicise the titles of the periodicals listed in it? Toccata quarta (talk) 13:37, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
