Splitting cells for multiple shading
editHello. I don't know how many people follow this page or even look at the talk, but I was trying to find a way to split the "county" cell for Sioux Falls into a top and bottom half and shade them accordingly (the top half to remain shaded as green to show that it's the county seat of Minnehaha, but leaving Lincoln unshaded). This was the best I could manage to do, but as you can see below, this is more so "highlighting" Lincoln in white instead of shading that whole line that it's on after the break. Anyone out there with better HTML skills than I that knows how to properly shade the same cell in a table with two separate colors? Thanks! Coulraphobic123 (talk) 07:37, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

merger proposal
editThis should be merged with List of towns in South Dakota to List of municipalities in South Dakota. Dylanvt (talk) 01:45, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- Agree, this will standardize it with other lists of municipalities. Mattximus (talk) 15:32, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- Before engaging in a mindless merger mania, perhaps you should do your homework. Townships in South Dakota are UNincorporated. Ergo, they are NOT municipalities. ("A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds...") - Ralph Waldo Emerson MarconiCheese (talk) 15:55, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- These mergers are important to bring these mixed up pages to a high consistent standard and I support Dylan's decision to actually do the work, but you are right. It needs to be carefully done so that there are 2 mutually exclusive lists per state. List of municipalities and list of census designated places, for incorporated and unincorporated places respectively. Between those two, I believe that covers all the places according to the US census. Mattximus (talk) 18:43, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- No, it doesn't. Townships in South Dakota are neither municipalities nor census-designated places. They're unincorporated areas of counties that have a different form of government and different powers than municipalities.
- "The subcounty general purpose governments in South Dakota consist of municipal (city and town) governments and township governments." - U.S. Census Bureau. 2017 Census of Governments, p. 257. Note the distinction made between municipal governments (municipalities) and townships.
- There is no geographical overlap between municipalities and townships in South Dakota. 2017 Census of Governments, p. B-1. Again note that municipalities are distinguished from townships.
- There are 311 municipalities in South Dakota and 907 townships, according to the 2012 Census of Governments. Are you trying to say there are 596 census-designated places in the state? You've badly confused legal jurisdictions and Census Bureau-defined catchment areas. MarconiCheese (talk) 19:15, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yes I was mistaken. I change my support to the merger of cities/towns/ and what appears to be a single village into the municipal list for incorporated places. Mattximus (talk) 15:54, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
- Given this information, I would amend my proposal to list cities, towns, and village together on List of municipalities in South Dakota and townships separately. Dylanvt (talk) 16:22, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- Update Needed, the merger proposal needs to be updated to reflect that List of municipalities in South Dakota now redirects to List of cities in South Dakota.--TommyBoy (talk) 20:33, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Use of estimates
editI don't think the use of population estimates is encyclopedic or warranted as the USA does regular actual census counts. Also having a 1 year change between an actual count and some estimate is not very meaningful, in fact quite misleading. I would stick to the standard of using only census counts, and not estimates, certainly not at a 1 year interval. Mattximus (talk) 02:52, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
