Should Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory be included?Yickbob (talk) 07:07, 26 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

From what I see on their website, they seem to offer some classes, but no full degree programs, so they wouldn't meet the criteria for this list. Toohool (talk) 21:57, 26 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Lost Colleges.com

I found an interesting site for "Lost Colleges in America" that provide some insight for defunct colleges in Maine; worth a check out for those researching new additions. The site can be found here. Yorkshiremany (talk) 17:01, 20 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

University of Maine Machias is no longer an independent university and should be removed form this list

edit

Hi everyone,

Quick question Shouldn't the University of Maine Machias be removed as it has now been taken over by The University of Maine and is now considered to be a remote campus. It has lost it's president, that position has been replaced by a Dean and it is no longer finacially independent either.

Do you have a cite for that? I see that it was proposed about a year ago, but I can't find anything that says it actually happened? And if the president lost her job, it looks like someone forgot to tell her. Toohool (talk) 03:41, 22 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Differences between entries in list and the associated cat

edit

I thought I'd create a map identifying the locations of the Maine colleges and universities. typically, the easiest way to do this is to use the associated cat, and pick up the shield coordinates from wiki data. In some cases there is a small mismatch between the increase in the cat, and the entries in the list.

In this particular case there are a number of differences. The collapsed table below summarizes the entries in the list any increase in the cats (there is is not one single cat, there is a separate one for private and public schools).

I highlighted in bold whenever there wasn't entry in the list without a corresponding entry in the cat or vice versa. With one exception, all of these must be resolved. The first obvious question is whether I'm misunderstanding the cats, it seemed logical to me that a cat for public colleges and universities combined with the cat for private colleges and universities are to match the list of colleges and universities. Is there any reason why that is a bad assumption? (I do see that the phone schools are in a separate list and don't seem to be part of the cat, so my intended map is for active schools). I mentioned one exception — the cat has an entry corresponding to an article about the University of Maine system as a whole. That makes sense to me and it is understandable why it would not have a separate entry in the list.

Each of the other items deserve some investigation, and three logical options occur to me:

  1. the item in the list should be added to one of the cats
  2. the item in the cat should be added to the list
  3. the item in either the list or the cat is in error and should be removed

I will create a subsection for each of the bold items other than the one already discussed and propose a resolution. If I feel confident I'm right I will carry it out. I hope others more familiar with the college and university system will weigh in.--S Philbrick(Talk) 19:43, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Andover College (Maine)

edit

What a rabbit hole.

I see some evidence that Andover was acquired by Kaplan.

There is a headline that says "Kaplan U Is Now Purdue Global" but I don't see anything at that site talking about Maine campuses.

This article says the South Portland campus is closed.

This article suggest that Perdue has locations in Augusta and Lewiston.

There is an article about Purdue global: Purdue University Global but I'm not seeing much about Maine campuses.

I suggest the end of her college article needs a lot of work, but I'm going to limit myself to removing the Cat, unless someone can clearly trace that school to something currently existing in Maine.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:20, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Andover is covered under the Purdue entry in the "Out-of-state institutions" section of the list. As for the school's article, I would put it under the subcategory Category:Defunct private universities and colleges in Maine. "Defunct" isn't exactly the right word, but it seems close enough to describe something that was absorbed into another institution and no longer has any identity of its own. Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts

edit

This school doesn't have a cat associated with them presumably because it is a red link. In theory I could track down an exact location and included on a map, but I'm going to restrict the map to entries for which there is article so I'll wait until someone creates the article.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:23, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Maine College of Health Professions

edit

This entry is a redirect to Central Maine Medical Center

There apparently is a college, but it appears that someone needs to actually create an article about the college. I'm going to treat this as effectively a redlink and not added to the map until is a proper article.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:45, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Maine Media College

edit

According to this site "Maine Media College has been granted candidate for accreditation status by the New England Commission of Higher Education. Candidacy is not accreditation, nor does it assure eventual accreditation."

This explains why it is not in the list as it is not yet an accredited school. I have no idea whether there are any rules regarding inclusion in the cat, but it is possible that the cat includes both accredited and not yet accredited schools. My plan is not to make a change to the cat, but not to include it in the map.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:39, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think it's reasonable to include institutions that are on track to accredited, i.e. they've cleared some level of scrutiny to be considered as a candidate. This goes for both the list and the categories. The main reason for the accreditation criteria, IMO, is just to have some reasonable threshold so that we can exclude a diploma mill operating out of a strip mall or the like. Saint Joseph's College of Maine

This was not in a category. I don't see any reason why not so I added it to "private universities and colleges in Maine"--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:32, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Seacoast Career Schools

edit

10 years ago, the decision was made that this should be merged with Premier Education Group, the entity that acquired this school. That hasn't happened. that organization isn't a college or university itself but appears, if the article is accurate, to operate programs under various names including Harris School of Business, which seem to have a location in Maine. According to this site, their accreditation is in question. if that gets clarified it might be appropriate to include the Harris School of Business in the category and the list. if someone wants to make the argument that they are currently accredited so deserve to be in the list, go for it, but until the situation is clarified I'm going to leave them out of the list and not on the map. I'm going to removed the category from the entry as it appears to be a defunct organization.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:43, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't appear to be a degree-granting institution. As far as I can see on their web site, they only offer diplomas. If they don't offer associate's degrees or higher, they're not degree-granting, so they don't fit the typical definition of "college or university" as applied on Wikipedia. Community Colleges

edit

Eastern Maine Community College, Kennebec Valley Community College, Central Maine Community College, Northern Maine Community College, Southern Maine Community College, Washington County Community College, York County Community College

These were not in a category. Although they do not offer four year programs only one into your programs I don't see any indication that the category or is restricted to four-year schools, so I added it to "public universities and colleges in Maine"--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:50, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
