references
editI couldn't figure out where the references go. I edited the dates of abolition of some of the counties according to: http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/34b-1.htm
ALSO, I may have reached the end of my resources on one question: Does Suffolk County still exist? It is mentioned in MA Gen Law 34B sec 1 (as above), but only in relation to the registry of deeds. The county is not explicitly abolished.
I found somewhere else on the web that said it was abolished 2005 and a third place that says it was eliminated in July 2007. I can't seem to find either of these now, though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bpotato (talk • contribs) 10:28, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Suffolk status?
editArticle consolidated city-county says that the consolidation relationship between Suffolk County and Boston ended in 1999. This article says it persists. The article Suffolk County, Massachusetts says the county government was dissolved; this site says it is "substantially unchanged". Which is correct? AJD 16:55, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- I marked citation needed in the article. The Suffolk County, Massachusetts article indicates that the county was dissolved in 1999, not that it was consolidated. mdkarazim (talk) 15:03, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Further useless data
editI actually emailed someone at the state (cis@sec.state.ma.us) who answered saying that one of the sites (one I mentioned above) says Suffolk was abolished as per Gen Law 34B sec 1. however, as mentioned, this law really doesn't say that Suffolk is abolished. I'd call the city of Boston and see if I could get clarification, but I'm not sure who to call... hm. The mayor's office? Does someone have a better idea? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bpotato (talk • contribs) 20:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- My understanding of the situation is that a law was passed in 2007 that amended General Law 34B/1 such that it now explicitly states that Suffolk County is abolished as of July 1, 2005. I'll try and search for a source. --Polaron | Talk 14:59, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not finding anything so it is likely this amendment didn't pass. In any case, I think the Suffolk County government is now in name only as it doesn't have any more functions distinct from the Boston city government since July 1, 1999 (aside from the Sheriff's Department) per General Law 34B/1. --Polaron | Talk 15:20, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Government abolished but servcies still provided
editShould the article clarify that for counties without formal governments, some county-level services still exist? These are run by the Commonwealth. For example, Worcester County still has a registry of deeds, a sheriff, and a district attorney. --CPAScott (talk) 13:30, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
If it's going to mention National Weather Service warnings, it should certainly mention that the whole court system is still basically run based on counties. john k (talk) 04:53, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
