European Union
editThe EU is not a country. This just totally defies the title of this article. You might as well add other unions to the lists... --2.245.84.167 (talk) 20:30, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- This is a special case considering the existence of an effective European Parliament, the exceptional federation-like level of integration, that people are free to move and work in other countries and the weakly controled internal frontiers that are not unlike what you would see between different States in the USA. It is also a recognized entity by the United Nations. It goes far beyong an economic agreement or a framework for international treaties, and de facto this is pretty close to a federation of States like USSR was after WW2 (except that people had less freedom to move between the Republics of the Soviet Union, but the constitution allowed SSR the right to became fully independent states and some did in the 90's).
- As long it is not assigned a rank number, I only see this as useful information as those exclude internal trades and give perspective with USA and China. I wouldn't be against also listing continents the same way, but the data seems hard to find unless we include internal trades.
- Now if you see any other example of a group of States that have such a huge level of integration, fell free to propose them tough I don't see anything close. But if you wish to exclude the EU, then perhaps we should also wonder if Puerto Rico should be included within USA stats (note that I agree with the current option to list it unranked), as it's level of integration is lower than between EU members. I also notice that the States in the USA are exceptionaly independent even for a Federation, as each States also have their own Army and could in theory use another currency (actually in some States the Pesos have been widely used in the past).
- There used to be a link about that topic in the discussion page, but it was archived by ClueBot III in May 2016 (in my opinion, the bot is too agressive with this talk page that was still at a manageable size). For information, I included the link that was provided with many insight on the topic:

- The Wikipedia page title is "List of countries by exports". The European Union is not recognized as a country by the United Nations (or any other entity including the EU itself). It is a supranational union such as the African union and the Commonwealth of Independent States. You are using your own interpretation of what defines a country to justify the inclusion of the European Union within this list.
Adropinthecommotion (talk) 02:20, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
- There is a massive unstated problem with listing the EU as it currently is listed. Much of the exports from EU countries are going to other EU countries. It would be like including exports from one U.S. state to another U.S. state in the volume of U.S. exports, despite that being an entirely domestic production and consumption of goods. If the EU is to be included as a single entity then only exports that actually leave the EU should be counted (since internal transfers of goods in any other country doesn't count as "exports" by any stretch of the imagination). A simple sum of exports of EU member countries is entirely wrong.

- Because of this conversation, I will remove the EU entry unless anyone contests - anyone disagree with rationale? Nicholas SL Smithchatter 23:56, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- I strongly disagree to remove EU in the list. The anti-EU campaign of country lists in Wikipedia is non-sense and maybe a source of Conflict of Interest, as mentioned in other country-related lists, EU is obviously not a country but has a lot of "things" to be considerate important because has many attributes of independent nations, being much more than a free-trade association such as ASEAN, NAFTA, or Mercosur. I've already modified the article to note that so it explains why EU is ranked in the list but obviously China is number 1 because its a country.--Manlleus (talk) 21:33, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- I hear that you strongly disagree and that you believe that information about the EU is good to know, but you don't offer a rationale for why this specific non-country entity (and no other non-country entitles) should be included in a list of countries (specifically, here, a list of exports by countries). I am very very pro-EU and believe that the EU has greatly improved the life of those within the EU and even outside of the EU! ... but my opinion (and yours) does not qualify the EU as a country. Perhaps a list of exports by cooperative agreement would be a good place to put the EU, but it is wholly inappropriate to list the EU here. All constituent countries of the EU are listed here as they should be. For that reason, the EU will be eliminated from the list of countries. Nicholas SL Smithchatter 17:19, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
- The EU, like Northern Mariana Islands, Pitcairn Islands, United States Minor Outlying Islands, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda and others is not a country. Nevertheless, since data exist and is useful, I don't see a valid reason to exclude them. If needed, the article could be renamed.
- I've fixed the problem of incorrect data reported above (exports of individual countries added together instead of exports outside of the EU) and removed the rank as also requested above. The RedBurn (ϕ) 20:28, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
- I agree that the EU should be re-added (without a ranking as it's a set of countries) on this list since it contains geographic entities which are not considered countries as well. Also, the table says "Country/Territory". Whether the article's title should be changed to reflect this is another topic to be discussed, but IMO, the EU should definitely be re-added.-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 17:35, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- I've reverted the removal, but a discussion needs to happen on Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) for all such lists of countries. The RedBurn (ϕ) 08:21, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Numbers do not add up
editThe second table lists for the World a net export of -380,698,790. Unless we are receiving goods from Mars on credit this cannot be. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.201.70.239 (talk) 11:33, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Addition of Service Exports in this List
editAs Exports are of two types:
1. Merchandise Exports: It means sending tangible goods (those goods that can be seen and touched) to other countries. Example- Gems & Jewellery, Leather & Leather Products, carpet tobacco, Iron Ore, Steel, Clothes, drugs etc.
2. Services Exports: It means sending intangible goods (those goods that can’t be seen and touched) to other countries. Example- Financial Services, Construction Engineering, IT, distribution etc.
This list already shows "Merchandise Exports" of countries, My request is that this list should also show "Services Exports". Moreover this Wikipedia page is titled as "List of countries by exports" so adding "Services Exports" section becomes necessary.

- I agree. The German article also covers this. Source for goods and service exports by country: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.EXP.GNFS.CD -- Maxeto0910 (talk) 01:55, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

- I just found that there's an own article about service exports. I linked it in this article. Now, there should still be a list of countries by both merchandise and service exports. It's covered in the German article as well.-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 09:41, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Wrong ranking
editIn the last days, two IPs changed the country rankings (not sure about the export values) several times so that the list doesn't match the given source data anymore (e.g., China is the largest exporting country, not the USA). Maybe someone can restore the correct version. I'm not keen on reading through the versions and figuring out in which all entries match the source data. P.S.: Same with List of countries by imports. China is not the largest importing country, it's the USA.-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 02:01, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
- Yes this list shows wrong rankings. According to all the different sources (All the sources were latest and trustable) that I have read I found that this list shows ranking of China, USA, India and Indonesia wrong (I am only talking about major countries here, this list has also ranked many nations wrongly).
- For Eg: This List Is showing India's total exports in fiscal year 2021-22 = $457.749 Billions, while in reality India's Exports for fiscal year 2021-22 were = $680 Billions (approx.)

Regarding fake export data
editThe export data of India includes only merchandise exports not services so don’t add services export data and upgrade India’s ranking in the list Soniutkarsh75 (talk) 09:40, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
Missing country
editI just realised Singapore had disappeared from the list. It was here before, now it's gone. I do not have the data though, someone please add it back in. Ichliebepolska (talk) 06:12, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
Update WTO data
editThe World Trade Organization already has data for 2022 exports by country, see given source (https://stats.wto.org/dashboard/merchandise_en.html).
Could someone update the figures accordingly?--Maxeto0910 (talk) 17:19, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
List doesn't match any of the sourced data
editWho is the blind retard that made the current list? It doesn't match any of the sourced data and is very wrong. Daehaksaeng (talk) 07:09, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Merger proposal
editI think List of countries by service exports can be nicely merged into this article, as it's just redundant to have an own article. This list is titled "List of countries by exports", so service exports should be included as well. The alternative would be to change the article title to "List of countries by merchandise exports" and create a disambiguation page for the current lemma which links to both lists.-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 21:06, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Bad idea. The list gets too long then.--Afus199620 (talk) 09:43, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Too long with regard to what?
- The section headings make the article still easy to navigate even in mobile mode. And it certainly isn't that long so that it would cause lags even on older devices.
- Per Wikipedia:SIZESPLIT, the rule of thumb is that an article with a readable prose size of less than 45 kB shouldn't be split just because of its length. So even if we add the combined total exports of both merchandise and service exports as well, the article shouldn't become too long. And note that these recommendations apply less strongly to list articles.-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 10:14, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Merge. It is part of the same topic. Users are unlikely to want to carefully read every single figure of the tables, so it's not as "long" as a prose article of the same byte size.---Ehrenkater (talk) 13:03, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Why not make three articles?
- List of countries by exports with total exports (merchandise+services)
- List of countries by merchandise exports
- List of countries by service exports
- It's not only length, there are also categorical differences that need to be explained more deeply. Similar to List of countries by GDP (PPP) and List of countries by GDP (nominal), we also don't merge them together. I can do the three lists.--Afus199620 (talk) 15:33, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Making three articles would be an option as well, as I explained. In this case, I'd suggest that "List of countries by exports" be a disambiguation page that links to "List of countries by total exports", "List of countries by merchandise exports", and "List of countries by service exports", similar to how "List of countries by GDP" is a disambiguation page to provide an overview. If we do so, "List of countries by exports per capita" should be changed to "List of countries by total exports per capita" in accordance, as it contains merchandise and service exports, and perhaps we could also create the missing lists, "List of countries by merchandise exports per capita" and "List of countries by service exports per capita". Maxeto0910 (talk) 18:38, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for making the three lists. This section can now be archived from my side. Maxeto0910 (talk) 00:39, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Protect page
editThe ranking has once again been messed up by a few jokers. The correct version should be restored and perhaps it's better if this page is protected to some degree. It's just an objective list article that gets new data annually, so it shouldn't be a big deal if this page is protected more strictly to prevent vandalism.--Maxeto0910 (talk) 02:28, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Maxeto0910: if the data on this page is being defaced by vandals, you may request protection at WP:RFPP. 2601:204:C901:B740:E54E:5B6:9E22:D62E (talk) 04:44, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Not sure how going to the same trademap.org source link and updating this page to the 2022 data that comes up makes me a "joker". Care to explain what I did wrong? Spacescadet (talk) 04:10, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
Redundant articles
editIt seems like List of countries by exports per capita makes this article pretty much obsolete as it includes total exports as well, and is even more comprehensive in this regard because it contains the figures of 3 different sources. The same applies to List of countries by net goods exports, which is essentially this article plus each country's resulting trade balance as a bonus. Perhaps some content should be merged or some information removed from these articles in order to not cannibalize other articles anymore. Maxeto0910 (talk) 21:45, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
