Pálffy and Erdődy

Confusion

This article confuses "Count of Austria-Hungary" (Graf) with "Count of the Holy Roman Empire" (i.e. Reichsgraf. Only the latter could rank as Hoher Adel (High Nobility): Austrian and Hungarial counts ranked only as Neider Adel (Low Nobility), except insofar as they became Standesherren (i.e., Reichsunmittelbar dynasties of the Holy Roman Empire mediatised in the early 19th century under the sovereignty of the Emperor of Austria or under some other sovereign, expressly retaining, pursuant to Article 64 of the 1815 Congress of Vienna Treaty, the same marital Equality of birth they enjoyed with reigning dynasties prior to mediatisation). I don't know what German word is translated by this article as the style of "Excellency", but if it is Erlaucht, this is traditionally translated as Illustrious Highness, whereas if it is Hoch und Wohlgeboren, that term is traditionally translated as the adjective "Highborn", and was not used as a style in directly addressing a count or countess. Austrian/Hungarian counts were only normally entitled to the latter. FactStraight (talk) 04:36, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
