editIs "duke" necessarily the best term to describe these people? Presumably that is not what they were called in Lithuanian. In England and Scotland the title "duke" was a relatively late important during the middle ages. Are they now mainly known from Latin records? PatGallacher (talk) 18:37, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Indeed, (West/Latin) European terminology for these regions is fairly confusing, especially because in diplomatic correspondence, titles of rulers of these regions would sometimes be translated to Latin or to the vernacular. That means that even today, the English language has trouble translating titles like these, because its translations have a different historical background. I think, quite similar to Russian knjaz', which is also often translated as duke, the Lithuanian kunigaikštis is best translated as prince (as in Fürst/ruler). 'Grand duke' would be great prince, as the 'primus inter pares' (see?) of Lithuanian princes. 2001:1C02:1901:ED00:8835:389:2C05:D8AD (talk) 10:30, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
