Need Help?

I'd like to help with this page. I see it was just started today, so I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but is there anything I can do? Also, where did the list come from? Is it from the Red List or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife or somewhere else? Corvokarasu 14:16, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

That would be great. I put a link to the source site under the reference section. It would be really helpful if you added fish or insects, which I haven't started yet. If you do a partial list, it would be helpful if you put the common name of the last species you listed here, so that whoever picks it up can tell where you left off on the source site, which lists species alphabetically by common name. Significant errors

This page alleges to be a list of endangered species yet the pages on the species themselves often show conservation statuses of anything but endangered. If this list is truly maintained by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, then it needs to be pruned back and made exactly true to their list. If we're going to use a different source, then our data needs to be consistent with the conservation statuses on the species' pages. Rossami (talk) 17:27, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Status of this page

In June 2007 the page was started. The comments in the talk page section "Need Help?" indicate that someone started wikifying the lists at this link to fill out the article: <http://ecos.fws.gov/tess_public/>

It is now October 2009. Today there are 1214 entries on the animal list and 750 entries on the plant list. The makers of the list - the US Fish and Wildlife Service - are distinguishing between "endangered" and "threatened" status, so most but not all of the lifeforms on their list meet their definition of endangered. That may or may not be a distinction to make in this wiki article.

In any case, right now about 350 plants and animals have already been listed and there are hundreds of creatures and plants to list, if they are to be integrated into Wikipedia. Even now this list could probably be broken into separate articles. The USFaWS already categorizes their entries in several ways, but whoever started this article set the precedent of just making a few categories based on major plant and animal groups and is including only scientific and common names. The source data could be adapted in other ways without much more additional trouble, including for example, distinctions between endangered and threatened status, or historical range.

I am not sure how involved I want to get in this article without discussing its future with someone who might collaborate with me. Who has some ideas about the best way to incorporate our data source into a Wikipedia page format likely to endure? Blue Rasberry 22:14, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

It's not enough, but I just added the summary data on top of the article. Without the summary, I think the article significantly mis-represents the endangered / threatened list. --Nmcclana (talk) 09:08, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Corrections

It looks like the main source used lists some species that aren't endangered, which I suppose I should have figured out when I put in the plain pigeon and such. In any case, I'm going through and removing the species that don't have articles for now, since they're unconfirmed, and making sure that only species that are listed as threatened on their articles remain. Also, this list is still incomplete, but I've removed the disputed tag for now, since I just quite thoroughly checked the facts. If someone would go back in the history and check the species that don't have articles, that would be great. Ketsuekigata (talk) 23:28, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
