Anime based on Video Games

There is a considerable amount of anime based on video games. Maybe we should list them here as well, or perhaps start a new list for them? -- LGagnon

If they are anime feature films they can totally go here (this page is part of a series of Lists of movie source material); if they are anime TV shows/miniseries, maybe the whole kit-and-caboodle should get its own page. My .02 :) jengod 22:28, May 26, 2004 (UTC)

I think perhaps there should be a TV series based on video games article, as there are a fair few such shows, such as a few Super Mario tv shows, Earthworm Jim, for example. There may still need to be anime specific lists for both if there are too many significant anime titles. Also, are there articles about the origins of tv show, in the same way as the list of movie source materials? If not, perhaps that might be worth looking at, as quite a few films, for example, have spawned tv series, such as the Back to the Future series. Silverfish 22:57, 27 May 2004 (UTC)

AFAIK, the movie Ecks vs Sever wasn't based on anything, but a game was later based on the movie. If so, it should be removed from the list.

Announced but not produced

I just noticed Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell having been added to the list by an anonymous user (131.109.101.4). These movies have been announced but are not yet out. Should they be part of the list? Jeff 17:38, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Not actually based on video games...

Some of these movies aren't video-game movies, but are movies based on properties that also have video games. Dungeons & Dragons and Hunter: The Reckoning are both tabletop RPGs, Rainbow Six is a novel, etc. --Boco XLVII 18:56, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

It can be safe to say that most of them are now associated with their video game adaptations. For example, while "Rainbow Six" was a novel, it spawned success with it's video game counterparts. Godzilla 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Tomb Raider III

It appears that they are going to make a third Tomb Raider movie after all, despite the lack of success of the second. I also added info on the planned sequel of Doom. If someone has box-office figures for Silent Hill, could you please add them to the list? (user:HannuMakinen)

Fatal Fury movies

I'd like to add that the Fatal Fury games have been adapted to anime films, but I don't know if they were direct-to-video or theatre releases. Does anyone know which category they belong in on this page? The films are:

• Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf (1992) - 46 Minutes
• Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle (1993) - 108 Minutes
• Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (1994) - 100 Minutes

Dungeons and Dragons

I think it must've slipped someone's mind to add Dungeons and Dragons as well as its sequel to the list. This should be done immediately.

Except that D&D was originally a tabletop RPG, not a computer game. The computer games are based on the tabletop RPG. Was the movie based on a computer game (and if so, which one? There's so many!), or the tabletop RPG? My guess is the latter. dougmc 18:18, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

If you know the history of the movie or listen to the director's commentary you will find out that this movie was licensed for years before from TSR, before it green lite as a movie. So the movie is definately based on RPG game and not some computer game. Plus the fact that the plot of the movie is not similar to any D&D video game out there. Just a bit of trivia for you. You may not know this, but somehow the director was able to buy the rights to a D&D movie from TSR for supposedly $5,000 even though he had never directed or written any screen plays for any movies before. Supposedly he sold his rights to New Line Cinema with part of the deal being that he could direct it. Just more interesting trivia. Protektor35 (talk) 00:31, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Should the TechTV/G4TV series Icons, later renamed to Game Makers, be included in this section? There are 4-5 seasons of this show about 40 shows or so of interviews and behind the scenes look at video game development. This page needs to be fix

Most of the dates on this page are flase (Like Devil May Cry in 2010 and Metal Gear Solid in 2009). Most of these movies are not official.

I went ahead and added citations for those currently in production (most directed towards IMDb for estimated release date purposes and forgive the ugly look for the 'References' section in the process). Most of the films in development aren't in "official" production if that's what you're refering towards. Some haven't really moved on pass the announced stage, but a few of them are being to move along slowly. I would suggest trying to research the film in question when you are in need of further information if the respective Wikipedia article fails to provide further information. I personally would recommend using IGN Movies: Games to Film as the most informative/quick source, but occasionally you could try Variety or GameSpot since some articles have been referenced from those sites. Resident Evil - second paragraph unclear

The second paragraph of the article says Resident Evil was both a success ("a number of films have become successful with general audiences") and a failure ("deviation from the source material has also been known to cause a failure of a video game movie"). The Resident Evil films have been fairly successful. Enough so that they are a trilogy now, and rumors floating around of a fourth movie being green lit to be made at some point. Though most gamers would probably say that Silent Hill is the most faithful to adaptation to a movie with the Resident Evil series following closely behind. Wolfenstein / Quake

AFAIK, there has been nothing official said about a Quake movie. The Return to Castle Wolfenstein movie however, is in production, I'm unaware of any problems, unless it's to do with the current writer's strike, so why are these movies listed under 'Development Hell'? 203.97.170.193 (talk) 22:11, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I done some quick research on anything involving the Quake movie adaptation and this[1] was the only link I could find using Google that appears in the first page of results. It is rather interesting that no other source confirms such a project being considered, especially IGN.com which has an enormous listing of various video game-to-film adaptations that haven't progressed much since their announcements. I suppose the lack of other sources and updates since 2005 landed Quake in the 'Development Hell' section, though I'm not sure why the Castle Wolfenstein movie is listed. Alien(s) Vs. Predator

Was it? Aliens vs Predator came out on the Atari Jaguar back in October 1994. Seems to me that this might pre-date the Dark Horse comics, or at least they both started production around the same time. Protektor35 (talk) 00:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Listing order

I personal think it is more confusing to most people to list movies and TV in chronological order rather than in alphabetical order. I just heard news of a movie based on pacman. is any proof avalible? should it be added?

Pokémon

Correct me if i'm wrong (and I'm sure you will!), but wasn't Pokemon a Card based game before it was ever a video game? I think these movies need to be removed from this list ASAP. Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

Box Office Figures

I added quite a number of the Box Office figures to the page. I guess I forgot to source all the numbers for when I pulled them. The source web site is is Box Office Mojo http://www.boxofficemojo.com/. If someone wants to take the time and make a link back to each film's web page for all the totals, I think that we could then remove the "no source" section from that part of the page. I just don't have time at the moment to do the 15-30 source links that the section would require.Protektor35 (talk)

Anyone know of a site that would list DVD sales totals for the lifetime of a movie? I have never seen one, but surely the DVD companies must report sales totals for shareholders since they are all publicly traded companies and should normally post sales totals for stockholders. release dates

The date next to Pokémon: The Movie 2000 is July 21, 2000, but that movie was actually first released July 17, 1999 in Japan. So which dates are we using, the dates the movies first were shown, or the dates they were first shown within the United States? And if we are only going to use the United States, what will we do with movies that never got a theatrical release in the states but got a theatrical release elsewhere? And again if we are using the United States dates we need to add a note at the top saying so and change the article name to List of films released in the United States based on video games. I have looked everywhere for some information or anything to confirm the possibility of having a movie based on the series and found nothing at all. UK Television Movie?

I remember quite a few years ago watching a film that was about some psychology students (i think) one of them designed a computer game that was like a point and click game where you had a choice of three victims and the player had to stalk them and kill them without being found out. One of the other students plays the game and once he gets the perfect kill the girl in the game is found to be real and dead. Anyone heard of this film at all?
