I suspect that "by" in this list means "directed by". In some periods of film production, and for some directors, regarding the director as the sole creator wouldn't be much of an overstatement, but for others it certainly would. Consider Spinal Tap, for example: the article calls it "the 1984 Rob Reiner film", but if you compare it with Reiner's and with Christopher Guest's other movies, it's obvious that it's much more Guest's than it is Reiner's -- not that I'd want to say it was "by Christopher Guest" (an oversimplification). That's why I've written not "by Ernst Lubitsch" but "dir. Ernst Lubitsch", and I recommend a change to "dir." (or "written and dir." or whatever) where appropriate. -- Hoary 05:30, 2005 Jan 17 (UTC)
