Next season
Can we please leave off updating for next season until all the playoffs have been completed? — sjorford++ 08:25, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- With the League Two play-off done today, I've now updated the rankings.HornetMike 18:16, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Too big?
The page now tells me it is too big. Perhaps we should put the future stadiums and old stadiums into a new page, something like "Ground developments in English football"? HornetMike 18:16, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well 30kb isn't TOO big, especially as the page is in sections so these can be edited by people with slower browsers with no problem. The new stadiums list is never going to be too big at any one time, but the former ones will always grow; so how about just creating a 'List of defunct English football stadia'? --Robdurbar 20:56, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good work! HornetMike 00:10, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
List is incomplete
I'm well aware that this list is only a "partial list"; but as it stands, it is grossly misleading.
It is accurate and can be maintained for the top five tiers of the Football Pyramid, but beyond that, we only have selected stadia included on the list. One glaring omission is Mossley A.F.C.'s Seel Park (4,500 capacity) [1], but there are probably other grounds that have been forgotten too.
Perhaps we should have our list of stadia by capacity for just the national divisions of the football pyramid.
Then maybe we should have an entirely separate list of all other stadia with capacity greater than 3,000.
SimonMayer 01:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- How about restricting this list to grounds of League Two criteria and above — isn't that about 6,000? That would still allow a fair number of non-League grounds. With the limit set at 3,000, it is much harder to maintain, as you point out. Note that there was no limit originally until I removed two very small grounds in May — I didn't want to trim the list any more than that but perhaps I should have. — sjorford++ 17:38, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think it would be a shame to loose a fair number of Conference grounds on that limit, considering the strength of the League nowadays. I'm not sure, there should be some limit. Perhaps only those in Conference North/South and above? That would include all the professional club grounds.HornetMike 11:32, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- It would be a shame to lose some of the interesting trivia where big stadia are occupied by smaller clubs, such as Gateshead. As a list, I think it should be complete, and the length of the article isn't a problem so much as in text articles. --Gavinio 07:09, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

REMEMBER
If you move a club up the list after a capacity increase it's not just the overall rank you need to change. Remember to edit the League ranking. Cheers, HornetMike 11:34, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Darlington
This page says 27,500 but if you click the stadium name to go to its own article it says 25,000. I couldn't find a reliable source in the 50 seconds I could spare MikesPlant 14:14, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Rotherham Half-built
Millmoor is no more than half built (having been there a week ago!) and can't be up to 10,000. Apparently there's little chance that the ground will be finished in the near future, so do we know what the actual capacity is at the moment? I'm fairly sure it's not the 7,500 that's in its article. --Gavinio 23:33, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
England?
I think you should note that Cardiff is in fact in Wales though they play in the English League system. Sorry to be pedantic but you do have Berwick in the list with a note. 130.237.175.198 13:40, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Altitude
I've created a similar page on Highest English Football Stadia by Altitude. If anyone has anything to contribute, please go ahead. --Gavinio 14:34, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
Overall Rank
I like the new overall rank column, but my concern is it'll be very difficult to add new stadia as you'll have to edit the numbers of all the clubs below it. Is there any way of getting round that? HornetMike 23:11, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- I did think about that when I put this column in. I added it by copying the table into Excel, playing around a bit and then pasting it back in. I concluded that there would be others who would/could do similar - but I'll keep my eye on it as well. MikesPlant 13:44, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Wish Id've blimmin' thought of this before I bumped Rotherham up due to their new stand! --Gavinio 07:10, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
And I'm having problems with the divisional rankings after my edit a few minutes ago. It's all a bit beyond me in my knackered state, I'm afraid. - Dudesleeper · Talk 03:10, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
Leamington FC's New Windmill Ground
As much as I hate to shout down my beloved Leamington FC I must take their name off this list until someone can provide a reference prooving that the capacity is 4,000. I have been there when the crowd has been around the 1,400 mark and it was jam packed. Cls14 17:31, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
I think you guys have a vandal
I know almost nothing about this subject, but it appears to me you might have a vandal inserting realistic-looking but fake information into the article, interspersed with legitimate edits by other editors (which is going to make it hard to revert). Someone more knowledgeable than me should look into 81.155.73.237's edit history and revert/warn/block if I'm right. If this is indeed vandalism, you might want to follow up on their other contributions on other football-related pages. --barneca (talk) 00:43, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- Looking at their edits further, I'm not as confident now; at least some are definitely legit (fixing broken links/spelling), but there is a lot of changing stadium names/capacities, and an editor at Conference National labelled it vandalism. If I'm wrong, please let me know and I'll apologize for sticking my nose into something I know nothing about. --barneca (talk) 00:52, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Citation Needed for Ashburton Grove being the largest club stadium in London
Is it needed? Isn't it obvious that it is by the fact that it is the first London-based club stadium on the list? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.142.212.93 (talk) 21:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Someone keeps moving the Ricoh Arena up the list. According to the reference, [2] the Ricoh Arena is 32,500, and indeed the official site states it is only 32,000 (I will in fact edit the main article now having done this research). welsh grounds
should these be removed as it is english stadia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.74.93.139 (talk) 18:35, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Mabye someone could create a similar list of Welsh grounds, through I'll admit at present there isn't much to go on there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.40.109 (talk) 10:54, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Someone removed the Millenium Stadium the other day on the grounds of it being in Wales. Fair enough but as it's hosted the English FA Cup, there is potentially an argument for it's inclusion. On the other hand, if we exclude grounds in Wales, then Ninian Park, St Davids Stadium (both Cardiff City), the Liberty Stadium (Swansea City), the Racecourse Ground (Wrexham) & Newport Stadium (Newport County) should all be removed from this list too. - JVG (talk) 02:09, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Old Trafford is not the second biggest fooball stadium in the world
It as not even close.
- Camp Nou = 98,918
- Santiago Bernabéu = 80,354
- Wembley = 90,000
- Maracana Stadium = 200,000, 155,000 seated
- And that's just a few off the top of my head

Editing following promotion/relegation issues
A user has just edited the list, changing the City Ground (Notts Forest) from league 1 to The Championship. Whilst this is perfectly true, they did not edit the other grounds in either division, to reflect their rising/falling rank within the league.
Might I suggest that the list is not edited until ALL the issues have been decided? Aside from the fact that stating Notts Forest are in the Championship being incorrect (the transfer does not take place until June) it is also, frankly, a pain in the backside if 5 or 6 users separately change 2 or 3 clubs. L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 01:27, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yet again we have three stadia all purporting to be the second biggest in the Championship - Pride park, Bramall Lane and the City Ground.
- Can people not look at all column before editing? L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 12:38, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- I've done a big tidy up of this, as people hadn't been dealing with the league changes at lower levels. Due to the unsourced and messy nature of these, as well as the apparent lack of willingness for people to update, I've changed the cut off limit to 5000 or Conference National. --Pretty Green (talk) 17:44, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- "...as well as the apparent lack of willingness for people to update, I've changed the cut off limit to 5000 or Conference National." - yes, THANK YOU! I think that this is a great idea.
- Can we also add a note somewhere asking users not to edit (for next season) until all issues have been decided, and that if they must, to change all numbers to reflect the changes? L.J.Skinnerwot|I did 09:34, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well there shouldn't be too much of an issue now for a number of months. The best option is to perhaps leave a note next March or so in 'invisible text' (that is, text <!--surrounded by these--> ) or perhaps even move for semi-protection for a month or so around the end of the season if the page is getting regularly disrupted. Pretty Green (talk) 07:20, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
"Notes"
Firstly, a very belated "here here" for the cut-off criteria set a few months ago. Vastly improves the article in my view. However, I feel it could be improved further if 90% of the notes are removed. At the moment they compromise of uncited speculation about improvements or theoretical future capacities, trivia and the occasional fact that could simply be put in the stadium article. I'm a bit dubious about Ground improvements at British football stadia, but it can be linked under the list and all the expansion stuff moved to there (if properly cited). Thoughts? HornetMike (talk) 11:37, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Again, perhaps we could set some criteria for notes then? I think the following are reasonable comments:
- Plans to move or expand for which planning permission has been granted
- Any ground sharing comments
- Biggest stadium by league/region comments
- And remove anything else? Pretty Green (talk) 20:20, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. HornetMike (talk) 13:52, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Edit for 2013/14 season
I Have started updating this for the coming season. All four football leagues are now up to date with the new rankings. I will do the non league ones over the next few days. Please bear with me. There may need to be a further amendment nearer the kick off as a few clubs are racing to get increased capacity in place. If they are in place by kick off on opening day I will amend them as well. To avoid confusion and duplication if people could give me a week or two without any other edits it would be appreciated. thanks82.41.132.127 (talk) 02:06, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Do we need the photos?
They are creating a lot of whitespace at the moment. Govvy (talk) 20:54, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- Only on smaller screens. What we really need is for the photos to be pushed below the table (rather than above) when the screen is too narrow and then displayed as a gallery rather than vertically. I do think some photos to illustrate the article is useful. An alternative is to include them as a column in the table, which would lead to many more photos. Jts1882 | talk 06:17, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
- I tried putting the images below and floating them left. This worked in the sense they appeared to the right of the screen on wide screens and appeared as a gallery below on narrower screend. However, at some screen widths there was that overlap of images and the table that you have seen elsewhere. Jts1882 | talk 06:37, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
- Or maybe shift the photo's to the left and give a brief paragraph for each one, a basically who owns that stadium, what sports and events it's used for. Govvy (talk) 10:36, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

FYI. New interactive map feature
A new feature for embedding interactive maps has recently been added to Wikipedia. <mapframe> could be useful for some of the football pages, on clubs, leagues or stadia. I've drafted out a map for London football stadia. An extended version might be suitable for this page, although it might be pushing the list concept. There is also a variant tag called <maplink> which provided a link instead of embedding the map. Jts1882 | talk 13:01, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
I see a map made from code like coordinates, stadium name and more. That's a lot of work if I have to do all of that manually on the keyboard alone! It does look interesting, but it's too much work for me personally to make such a list for any such football Wikipedia site. JurijFedorov (talk) 12:40, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
- @JurijFedorov:. I have created a template and module that makes it easier. All it needs is a list of stadia or football clubs with valid wikipedia pages and it can get the coordinates and other information from Wikidata. The map in this article uses it. A minimal example could be as coded below and shown right.
{{Football map |text=England football stadia |width=300 |height=400 |align=right |zoom=6 |size=small |latitude=52.8 |longitude=-1.4 |stadium1=Tottenham Hotspur Stadium |stadium2=Elland Road |stadium3=St James' Park |stadium4=Villa Park |stadium5=Old Trafford }}
- It can also use a list of club names and there are various options for customisation. There is more information and some examples at {{Football map}} and Module:Football map. If you have further interest, I can answer further questions here or, better, on the template talk page. Jts1882 | talk 13:24, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
List
In the what the list includes section, it mention all stadiums whose teams compete in the top 5 tiers of the EFL. Therefore shouldn't Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County, and Wrexham's grounds be on here despite being in Wales. Also it mentions the 9 teams of the WSL but there are 12. Are the other 3 stadiums shared with teams on this list? Mn1548 (talk) 14:08, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Filter which Stadiums are included
Why are we including stadiums smaller than 5000 at all. I propose including only the top 4 leagues and any stadium which seats more than 5,000. So national league (formerly the Conference Leagues) and regional leagues would still be included Levels 5-8 (step 1-4), but only if the stadium has more than 5,000 capacity. I would also eliminate all the stadiums which don't have a seated capacity of at least 5,000. The unseated capacity seems at best a guess unless restricted by local fire codes or something and there is absolutely no data on it, nor can it be verified in any substantive way. --Trödel 01:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
Updates to format and some capacities
I updated the format to include the notes on the appropriate information in the cell. The former and commercial names of the stadiums are now notes next to the common name AND the capacity notes on the capacity. The Leagues are now listed so it is easier to compare and see the different stadiums vs the league in which the team currently plays. Also updated capacities to match the latest information. BUT I have only done that for the Women's Super League, the Premier League, and the EFL Championship. It still needs to be done for League One, League Two and the National Leagues (plus the couple of stadiums in Step 3 or Step 4 - Level 7&8). --Trödel 04:07, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
- Updated League One, League Two stadiums. Haven't verified National Leagues or Step 3/4 stadiums. --Trödel 17:33, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- All Updated. Also added sort key for level so the clicking to sort by league name puts them in proper order rather than alphabetical. Note that all level 5 and 6 teams are listed as "National League" - will need to break them out. May wait after the pro/rel decision for this season --Trödel 18:57, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
National League Stadiums
There seems to be a lot of inconsistencies in the reported capacity of National League teams for example on the 2023-24 National League stadia and locations the following teams were listed as having more than 5,000 capacity. Here is a list of those teams that aren't currently on the list that claim in the National League 2023-24 season page that their capacity is over 5,000.
- Spennymoor Town FC 6,700 updated to 4,300. Wikipedia listed 6,000 or 6,700 depending on where in wikipedia you look but the only referenced capacity I could find is 4,300 (Field of Dreams: Capacity passes 4000 mark, Spennymoor Town FC, 17 August 2020, retrieved 2023-05-23), and much of that is not seated. So I updated the team going back to 2012 when they were in National League Div 1.
- Hereford F.C. - claims 5,213 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Buxton F.C. - claims 5,200 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Boston United F.C. - 6,643 here but claims 5,000 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Bath City F.C. - 8,880 here but 8,840 2023-24 NL - minor diff not researched
- Farnborough F.C. - 6,000 here but 7,000 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Weymouth F.C. - claims 6,600 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Havant & Waterlooville F.C. 5,250 here but 5,300 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Chesterfield F.C. - 10,400 here but 10,504 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Rochdale A.F.C. - 9,507 here but 10,249 on 2023-24 NL - 9,507 was the official capacity listed on the EFL League Two website for 2022-23 season.
- Hartlepool United F.C. - 7,833 here but 7,856 on 2023-24 NL - 7,833 was the official capacity listed on the EFL League Two website for 2022-23 season.
- Altrincham F.C. - 6,085 here but 7,700 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Aldershot Town F.C. - 7,100 here but 7,200 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Barnet F.C. - 5,233 here but 6,418 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Woking F.C. - 6,000 here but 6,036 on 2023-24 NL - not researched (but reference here is to 2015 football ground guide that I have found less than reliable
- Bromley F.C. - 5,000 here but 5,300 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
- Eastleigh F.C. - 5,192 here but 5,250 on 2023-24 NL - not researched
Then there are additional teams in the National League divisions that have smaller than 5,000 stadiums
- National League - 6 teams
- National League North - 17 teams
- National League South - 17 teams
I suspect that the capacities for many of these stadia will be hard to verify to a reliable source. And much of it is estimated since it is not all seated capacities. Any thoughts one what to do here? Do we want to continue the previous standard of minimum of 5,000; raise that standard some; require that the 5,000 minimum be all seated to be included; other ideas? --Trödel 22:53, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
