Inhabited "ghost" towns?

edit

Every definition I've seen requires that "ghost" towns be uninhabited, or at least have only a few people living in the vicinity. How can towns with 50 or 100+ people be considered true "ghost" towns. If no one posts a rational defense of this, I will be removing such town names from this list shortly. It depends on how deep the definition goes. Wikipedia's own definition included both the "completely abandoned" one and one that states that "[t]he term is sometimes used in a deprecated sense to include cities, towns, and neighborhoods which, while still populated, are significantly less so than in years past" which a lot of the towns of 50 and 100 are. I have no objections to deleting some and some general clean-up but the definition of ghost town seems to be in the eye of the beholder and has no one true definition. I would love some GPS coordinate column for google map. (You can also get GPS coordinates from google map.) It is very hard to find where you are talking about. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edenflux (talkcontribs) 22:19, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's fixed. However, it probably would've been easier to just edit it yourself instead of posting something on the talk page. Bhall87Four Scoreand Seven 22:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Agree, fix it instead of whining about a typo. Sbmeirow (talk) 01:20, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Zyba

edit

I believe there is one building left standing after the tornado, quick google map, it's next to the road and RR tracks. There was a small home west of white building that I thought also survived the tornado, about 40 feet, but appears to be removed sometime within the last two decades, guessing was destroyed by flood damage. I would be curious to know if the family stories were wrong or if the source was wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.134.137.75 (talk) 20:55, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

If I'm looking at the correct spot (I don't have my info readily available), is it the small white building just to the west of the railroad tracks (I'm looking in street view)? I'm just going by what the source says which is that the town essentially ceased to be after the tornado. If there is a building still standing we can add that but according to the source, Zyba, Kansas stopped being a town after the tornado. Bhall87Four Scoreand Seven 01:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup

edit

This article needs to be cleaned up. The definition of a ghost town should be redefined to be a population of zero or a very low number of people (as close as zero as possible), and we should define that exact number. There is a large number of small towns and unincorporated communities in Kansas, but just because they are small or dropping in population doesn't mean they automatically be put be on this list. Rural flight has hammered lots of small towns, but as long as there are people in an official city, then it shouldn't be on this list. • SbmeirowTalk03:11, 17 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

What shouldn't be on this ghost town list
