Please, do not use the FIG "residence" information for the "hometown" column. These places are not hometowns to athletes and carry far fewer information as they are often the capital city where the national team is located. Sources such as the athlete's Facebook page may be better. I also think it is better to leave the cell blank if "hometown" is not easily verifiable. I am trying to remove any inaccurate information in the hometown column that is obviously inaccurate to me, and please do so too if you find something! Xlhdh (talk) 23:38, 1 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
It seems like the countries are listed in the hometowns for some gymnasts, and not for others, without any rhyme or reason. I think it would make more sense to list only the city if their hometown is in the same country they're representing, and then to list the city and country if it's not the same. Agree/disagree? @Sammimmas: I also think some of the hometowns are inaccurate - and it's hard to define. Some of the references cite the FIG database, but FIG only provides the gymnast's birth place or current residence, and not hometown. Xlhdh (talk) 03:44, 3 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Sammimmas: Usually women's artistic gymnastics gets more attention, at least in the US, which is one of the biggest consumers of the English wiki, so I think it is fine to have that extra column. The question is what should we put in there. How about converting that to a "notes" section and provide birthplaces and hometowns, or previously represented countries if that's different from their current residence? I changed the birthdays into templates, so that it will be easier to translate this page into another language, which I am planning on doing. I know it delays page load but I think it's a reasonable use case. Please provide your opinions!
Also, anyone know why the birthday templates are showing as of August 30? I was quite sure I made templates for August 6, which is the day when gymnastics starts at Rio.
Thanks! Xlhdh (talk) 20:58, 3 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
