- Wikipedia is not a forum for discussion of topics; you'll need to find another website to discuss this. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:34, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
If your group does not have a WP article, do not add it here
editThis is list is meant to contain notable groups only. Please see item #1 from WP:CSC for more info. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 15:15, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
This article/list should be a category
editI think this article should be a category, because it is not an enciclopedic article nor an enciclopedic-support article, with no references and too short. --Zerabat (talk) 00:06, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
- A Hacker groups category already exists. All articles in this list are WP articles which, as a group, are much better referenced than the average article. As my only interest in this article is keeping out vandalism and self-promotion, it would personally save me some time to kill it, but I can see where some readers would find it more convenient to have this list, with its concise descriptions, as opposed to just the bare category page. And the relevant guideline, WP:Categories, lists, and navigation templates, says, '...the "category camp" should not delete or dismantle Wikipedia's lists, and the "list camp" shouldn't tear down Wikipedia's category system—doing so wastes valuable resources. Instead, each should be used to update the other.' --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 00:32, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
I don't know about Goodyear's apparent justification for or tolerance of 'camps' (doesn't sound consistent with existing WP policies concerning editors, such as 'owning' an article, or on edit wars), but I agree with Zerabat that a list of articles should be a Category, so it remains more consistent with additions and deletions of articltes. Since there is overlap between a Category and an Article, I suggest that someone more knowledgeable than I propose a new WP policy in the right way, forbidding articles that are lists of articles. If that makes such lists have a problem, such as not being found by searching, then Categories need to be fixed so they look like Articles. There is no shame in adding such a feature to the underlying wiki, IMO. There may be compatibility problems for such a change, such as for robots, but I believe such problems are not major and are worth the resulting elegance. David Spector (talk) 11:51, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Please do not tag article as needing references
editAll entries on this list are to Wikipedia articles. Please consult the listed articles for supporting references. If an individual article is insufficiently sourced, please tag the individual article. If you want to note your concern here, please tag the item inline or on this talk page. A generic tag at top of this list misleads readers and is unhelpful to editors. Misleading, because references in the listed articles do demonstrate that entries are notable hacking groups; unhelpful, because if there is a stray entry with a problem, the generic tag does not indicate which is the problematic entry. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 00:25, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
- Note that this article is relevant as the overview of Verifability. Readers must be able to check that Wikipedia articles are not just made up. This means that all quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. I have officially challenged this article as being unreferenced, and I was true. Note that the WP:BURDEN to produce a citation is on the person who restores the content, (which is you). Nonetheless, please include at least one citation per entry. Consider this me 'challenging' this article's notability. Being a list does not exclude it from requiring references.
- Especially see WP:MINREF. Any statement that's been challenged therefore requires an inline citation. Tutelary (talk) 02:19, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

- Extensi0n A whitehat hacker group. Mostly known for their attacks on cybercriminals.
Because Extension is a well known whitehat hacker group that has helped a lot of people with viruses and taking down cybercriminals. But unfortunately it has not been added to this list. Botxnt (talk) 12:32, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Other notable groups
editKaspersky has this neat grapic of known hacker groups. Should be a good source or at least a worthy link. [1] --Beliar (talk) 14:48, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
- There's also the Codoso Group. [2] -- Beland (talk) 00:09, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Beland: Beliar's Kaspersky list is malware or exploit-kits and not groups, so we can't use it. However, C0d0so0 is suitable for inclusion but since it lacks own article we need something else to anchor them with, or one can create Codoso article; they're certainly prolific. -- dsprc [talk] 02:39, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
- Added an entry to Wikipedia:Requested articles/Applied arts and sciences/Computer science, computing, and Internet for Codoso. @Beliar: Added link to Kaspersky list on Advanced persistent threat. -- Beland (talk) 20:43, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Beland: If you or others have something to anchor C0d0so0 with, feel free to include their entry in list whilst waiting for article creation. Something like:
"Codoso -- suspected Chinese APT responsible for ABC; involved in/related to XYZ/<other event for which we've article or section>."
is acceptable. I've not nor will have time to research them to know what should be used specifically. -- dsprc [talk] 05:57, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Why is New World Hackers not listed?
editA group "New World Hackers" is referenced in several WP pages, yet does not appear in this list or have its own page. Is it notable or not? David Spector (talk) 11:40, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- If it's notable someone should write an article about it with sufficient reliable sources to show its notability. Simply being mentioned in other Wikipedia articles does not necessarily mean the group is notable. It's fairly common for editors to shotgun mentions of their favourite topic into various articles, whether the topic is notable or not.
- Are the mentions sourced? Are the sources discussing the group or simply mentioning the group in passing? Please provide links to the articles so we can look at this. The only article I am aware of that mentions this group is October 2016 Dyn cyberattack. One is not "several". And this article only says that the group has claimed responsibility but the claim has yet to be confirmed. Meters (talk) 18:07, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Repeated attempts have been made to claim that LulzSec was reformed in 2018. Its article makes no mention of this, and says that the group has been inactive since 2011.The first three attempts were unsourced. The fourth attempt had two sources, [1][2] but the first ref, a blog which may not be a reliable source, simply reports a claim by @shadow_xor who claims to be a member of LulzSec. Similarly, the second ref appears to be another blog, and simply says "Lulzsec has also claimed to return". There is nothing about the supposed 2018 reformation date, the other names mentioned in the edit, or the the group's supposed goals. Even if we accept that the name "LulzSec" is being used again, that does not mean it is the same group. Anyone could have started using the name again. Meters (talk) 04:31, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- And there is nothing in LulzSec to support the new claim that this group was originally founded in 1999 [3] [4]. Meters (talk) 07:41, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
