Questions

edit

What if a building is destroyed, despite the efforts of preservationists? Does this mean it should go down the memory hole?

What about buildings that are not on any official registry but that people want to talk about? I think you should be able to make a category. Significant (Historic? Buildings of (e.g.) Columbia, Missouri

If a historic building is destroyed, but was documented, like the historic Penn Station in New York City whose demolition sparked a U.S. historic preservation movement, it certainly is wikipedia notable. If buildings are on an official registry, it is easier for wikipedia to deal with, because significance has been judged by third parties, and there is documentation available. About the buildings in Columbia, MO, do you mean these ones? You are entitled to write articles about them! doncram (talk) 06:53, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Today I started this List of destroyed heritage. A mention for every destroyed monument to avoid them go down the memory hole. emijrp (talk) 21:26, 1 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ooops! Sorry, just read this now, and I have created a project page here: Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Monuments 2011. I didn't even know I was supposed to write a proposal, but since I am just trying to consolidate in English what has been going on this year for WLM in Europe I guess there really isn't even a project on the English Wikipedia, just an translation of an international one. Maybe next year for a world-wide WLM? Jane (talk) 07:06, 7 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Looks like the project was finally created: Wikipedia:WikiProject Historic sites. Congrats. emijrp (talk) 22:49, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Improving the List of heritage registers as part of the Connected Heritage Project

edit

Dear all

We are working on a project called Connected Open Heritage which aims to document built cultural heritage in danger around the world. Currently no organisation holds a central list of different immovable cultural heritage registers so our first task is collate it. The nearest resource available is the the Wikipedia article 'List of Heritage Registers'

We are asking people from all around the world to contribute to this list, you can in two ways:

  1. Help collate a list of built heritage registers on Wikipedia. We will then contact these organisations to encourage them to release their data, media and text under Wikimedia compatible licenses.
  2. Help complete country reports for each country on

The countries we are most interested in getting information for are:

  • Afghanistan
  • Argentina
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Chile
  • China
  • Egypt
  • Fiji
  • Georgia
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Iraq

Country Reports

edit

If you know the country well please help us to know which countries to focus on first by filling in a country report including references. Below is a template that you can follow, please create a page at the URL https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Connected Open Heritage/Countries/NAMEOFCOUNTRY.

  • Government agencies and cultural heritage in NAMEOFCOUNTRY
  • Legislated protection of cultural heritage in NAMEOFCOUNTRY
  • Policy decisions on access to public information in NAMEOFCOUNTRY
  • Legislations hindering the distribution of pictures in NAMEOFCOUNTRY
  • Museum or archives that could be willing to add their material to Wikimedia
  • Wikimedia activity in NAMEOFCOUNTRY

Once you have finished the country report please link to it on this page.

Thanks very much

Inaccurate page name, suggest changing it to List of built heritage registers

edit

Hi

There are many kinds of heritage including built heritage, intangible cultural heritage, natural heritage, languages etc. This is a list of built cultural heritage, the title covers a much larger topic which could not really be covered by one page. I suggest moving this page to List of built heritage registers.

Thanks
