Should there be a complete list of all the jazz musicians with bios on Wikipedia here? Many are currently left out. Those listed under individual instruments are arranged roughly chronologically (at least in my contributions). Buddy Bolden

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that Buddy Bolden actually played jazz, even trditional jazz. He never recorded and later well known jazz musicians who played with him admitted that he played ragtime. Although some of the early jazz musicians spoke of ragtime as jazz since it is an off shoot from it, ragtime isn't jazz. Although he lived to 1930, he lived in a mental institution for about twenty years. Just a thought. Pitchka 16:29, Dec 17, 2004 (UTC)

Jazz artists vs. jazz musicians

What is the intended difference between this article and List of jazz artists? I made the artists one a redirect to this list, please revert that if I was mistaken. Haakon 21:27, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Bix Beiderbecke

Bill Evans etc

I'm going to revert the last change of Bill Evans to Gil--since the b & d dates here are correct for Gil. I have no problem adding Bill Evans (pianist) to Modern Innovators list, but this entry was for Gil, not Bill.

Note this would be Bill Evans pianist, as noted, not the younger sax player who played w/ Miles in the 80s or the former name of Yusef Lateef.

Also should Louis Armstrong be under Modern Innovators as well as Important? more likely under swing... right?Blueswalk 17:37, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Harmonicas etc

I've just perfomed an edit, and wanted to mention it, and also to float a suggestion:

I removed Lee Oskar and added Hendrik Meurkens from the Harmonicas section. Oskar has a bio on Wikipedia, Meukens doesn't. But Oskar is not a Jazz musician, to my knowledge, and hasn't played with known Jazz players, and his bio doen't support him being in this section. Hendrik Meurkens is a Jazz player, and has recorded with many Jazz musicians.

The suggestion is that we try to keep these listings clean, if not lean. Adding people because they improvise on an instrument isn't enough. For the purposes of this list, 'Jazz Musician' should be limited to someone who is called a Jazz Musician in the press, or calls themselves a Jazz musician in their promotional literature, or is in another genre (rock, funk, blues, fusion, classical etc) BUT has also perfomed and/or recorded with 'known' Jazz players. Very helpful would be "noted by city"

Very helpful thing would be the list of jazz musicians noted by city (musicians who worked in NY, Chicago, etc.). I'm a student in Jazz Conservatory and I'm required to learn such list (for "History of jazz" class) and can't find it anywhere ;) . Greetings!

Hmm... that's a bit difficult as most of the major figure did lots of travelling/relocating throughout their lives. For example, Armstrong started in New Orleans, then there was his Chicago Period, then New York. Dexter Gorndon moved to Europe then came back. I think that would be tough and would have to be a separate, special project.Blueswalk 20:45, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Usefulness of page

I'm curious whether anyone else is concerned about the redundancy built into this page. Many of the lists included here have their own pages (see Template:Jazz lists). Thoughts? This article isn't a list of jazz musicians on whom Wikipedia has articles. This article has about 12 musicians that aren't wikipedia articles. How about this for a beginning sentence instead:

This is a a list of jazz musicians

OR

This is a list of notable Jazz musicians.

I agree that its a bit informal, but ideally the list shouldn't include any musicians that don't have articles. Putting that at the top both explains the absence of less well known musicians and reminds readers to not add anyone to the list who doesn't have a wikipedia article. Modern innovators

The section title "Modern innovators" is problematic, I think. I am not sure how Louis Prima wound up there (or perhaps I'm missing something). At any rate, inclusion in that section (or really, anywhere on this page) could be questionable and really should include some kind of attribution and/or other threshold for inclusion. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 23:17, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Alphabetical, or birthdate order?

Some sections are in birth date order, and some are alphabetical. Which way should it be? Someone went to great lengths to add birth/death dates in some sections, and in others they are simply alphabetical. Unfortunately, the sections ordered by birth date seem to invite people to add musicians they cannot immediately find on the list. I'm going to alphabetize everything except the first section (Giants of Jazz) unless I hear otherwise. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 01:18, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
