Tidy up and criteria for inclusion

edit

Does anyone have any ideas on how we can tidy this article up, and establish the criteria for an inclusion? I'm aware I've added many poorly substantiated ones. Alexanderkowal (talk) 22:35, 9 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Maybe splitting the sections or having subsections, like horn of africa, swahili coast, great lakes all under east africa? Alexanderkowal (talk) 13:55, 10 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think classifications should have to be supported by at least one source Alexanderkowal (talk) 17:34, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
For links to dynasties I've also put the modern country their kingdoms covered Alexanderkowal (talk) 16:15, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Title change

edit

I realise I've acted unilaterally in changing the title of this page without reaching a consensus with other editors, however there doesn't seem to be many editors active on this page. If you disagree with anything I'm doing, please feel free to talk about it. Alexanderkowal (talk) 14:25, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Areas that aren't covered well

edit

Just wanted to make a list of areas that I feel aren't covered well in this list for anyone that wants to improve it:

  • Madagascar throughout all periods (before Imerina conquest)
  • Cameroon
  • Swahili coast prior to Kilwa
  • Horn of Africa, particularly minor states surrounding Ethiopia
  • Southern African tribal kingdoms
  • city states in West Africa
  • kingdoms in West Africa around the time of Ghana
  • probably missing some minor kingdoms in the Great Lakes
  • chiefdoms that were centralised and sizeable (vague I know)

I'll update this if I make any progress on these or identify any more gaps Alexanderkowal (talk) 20:10, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

There's a General History of Africa book coming out this year which should help tremendously Alexanderkowal (talk) 20:12, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I haven't done volume 7 which covers 1880-1935, so might be missing some alluded to in there Alexanderkowal (talk) 20:54, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also I'm aware that the comparison between kingdoms in heavily WP:Synthesis however I do think that this should be an exception because it's very difficult to abuse and adds a lot to the article Alexanderkowal (talk) 16:17, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Alexanderkowal and thanks for all your improvements to this list. However, despite the improvements, the list fails criterion 2b since there are too many unreferenced paragraphs. Examples are the paragraphs starting with "Ancient history refers to the time period", "Outside of North Africa, most of African political history", and "Sub-Saharan African societies have broadly been labelled". According to criterion 2b, these passages require inline citations "no later than the end of the paragraph". I suggest that you add all the relevant references before a renomination.

A few other observations

  • WP:EARWIG detects no copyright violations
  • This is a list of kingdoms and empires in Africa throughout history. This lead sentence more or less just repeats the title, see MOS:THISISALIST
  • For this reason, and in the interest of highlighting difference replace "difference" with "differences" or "the difference"
  • worldstatesmen.org is an unreliable source
