Merge 2 articles into this one?

edit

I propose merging List of cities with over one million inhabitants and the population chart in Megacity (which could then be transculded) into this list and using the more recent statistics in those articles. The reason I want to merge them is because they overlap a lot. The reason I propose merging into this one is because it has a lot more readership. I agree that it is not possible to merge both lists because they are too different in style and substance. My idea would be to change the title of the List section with city proper, urban area and metro population into "Overview" and add the list of the million-plus cities below it with some explanation.--Afus199620 (talk) 20:17, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Can we delete this request? It's nonsensical and will make things unweildy. 2401:7000:CB35:8900:349B:5597:48E7:70D3 (talk) 10:42, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Closing, with no merge, given that the specific proposal has no support, there are objections, and the discussion is stale. Klbrain (talk) 17:02, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

The population of Pune is Incorrect, it is 7,184,000. As per: https://www.census2011.co.in/census/city/376-pimpri-and-chinchwad.html#:~:text=Pimpri%20and%20Chinchwad%20Population%202024&text=The%20current%20estimate%20population%20of,was%20postponed%20due%20to%20Covid. Don't put two items in same table cells

edit

I click to sort on metropolitan area population... and where is New York? Down below, because the two items in the same HTML table cell wreck the sort! Jidanni (talk) 13:05, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

It is already on the list RudolfRed (talk) 21:30, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pune might be wrong.

edit

Pune is #59 and is between Suzhou and Harbin. It shows those two cities as having over 6 million people but it shows Pune as having over 7 million people. This might be a mistake as someone might have accidentally put 7 instead of 6. If it were to be changed to six it would be make sense because it would be between the other two. Or it might be in the wrong place. If it were to be moved it would be at #52. 69.62.224.183 (talk) 18:38, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done. Good catch, the figures in that column are from the referenced UN 2018 PDF. Declangi (talk)

The UN source is misleading, why using it?

edit

Why is the population ranking in this article using the UN source as the main source? The UN source is very wrong and outdated (still using the 2018 figures), the so-called "City of Tokyo" in the UN source is actually a metropolitan area (the Greater Tokyo Area) rather than a proper city. It contains Yokohama (the second-largest city in Japan) and numerous nearby satellite cities. The real Tokyo City (consisting of the 23 special wards) only has approx. 9.7 million people. As a matter of fact, Tokyo is not the largest city in the world, not even close of being one.

This article spends a lot of energy explaining that there are mainly three different types of cities: city proper, urban area, and metropolitan area. If we study the UN source carefully, we would notice that it has mixed up these different types of cities and used all three in their population ranking. That's just misleading information for the readers. Although it was published by the UN, I reckon we should cast it away and use a better source as the main source instead. 2001:8003:9100:2C01:F5EF:C921:7B13:49DD (talk) 23:29, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
