Page move and expansion & merge

edit

If nobody opposes, I'll combine this article with Largest Lakes in Europe (Western, Central & Eastern) and move the page to List of largest lakes of Europe and include lakes from the rest of Europe. Even if the size of the list doubles it still isn't very large. — JyriL talk 10:30, 29 August 2

Why isn't it listed? Its surface area is 1,084 km², according to its Wiki page. 176.52.33.49 (talk) 22:33, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Miss calculation of conversion

edit

The Lake Garda is bigger than Lake Mjøsa in kilometers² but yet in Miles² it is smaller. I assume this is a conversion error but i realise it could also be based on varying sizes of lakes. Bilingual squirel (talk) 12:06, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Good eyes! It's not so much a conversion error as it is a conversion and precision problem. For Garda we've entered 370 square kilometers (two places of precision) and converted it to square miles (370.00000 km2 = 142.8578 mi2 or so; our conversion appropriately recognizes the precision and rounds to 140, that is, two places of precision).
For Mjøsa we have entered 365 (that's three precision places) and our conversion is agreeably so precise (365.00000 km2 = 140.92729 mi2 or so, and we get 141, that is, three places of precision, as a result).
This could be fixed, or addressed, or maybe swept under a carpet with an appropriate footnote if only we had sources cited for ANY of these figures. But we don't so I don't know how two tweak these two lakes (or any others that exhibit the same problem). Possibly we could increase the precision of our listed areas, but that would depend entirely on our sources (which we apparently do not have), so we're stuck. Or said another way, <anguished sarcasm> it doesn't matter what we put in our table, as it's all unsourced and not verifiable from the page itself.</anguished sarcasm> Not that I'm bitter. — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 18:57, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
