Talk:List of minor characters in Battlestar Galactica (2004 TV series)

Proposed guidelines

edit

I'm suggesting that characters be added to the list because because of a combination of a)episode count and b)importance to the story. I believe that recurring characters (those that appear in more than one episode) should be on the list, as well as characters that are *heavily* featured in only one episode (Sesha Abinell, Commander Garner, et al).

I've added an episode count (using IMDB and BattlestarWiki as sources), to illustrate how often each character appears. I feel it is important to draw a distinction between characters that only show up three times and characters that show up twenty times. I counted the miniseries as an episode, and the webisodes as an episode. Is there an easy way to keep it up to date? Perhaps some sort of notation that says "episode count as of [Season, Episode]"?

Does this sound okay? Any other suggestions? Monsieurxander 13:07, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Sounds good, Monsieurxander. Characters such as Hotdog, who appear in many episodes and, while adding little but "recognizable pilot on Galactica" elements to the story, do have numerous lines and more than just background appearances, should be on the lists. Likewise, characters like Garner and Phelan, who only appear in one episode but that episode revolves around them, should be on the list. The ones I would avoid are characters like Mr. Hoshi, who appear in multiple episodes but do very little plot-wise, and the nurse in Scattered, who is in one episode but has less than a very central part in the story, should remain off the list. Helmandsare 00:48, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
The paramedic/nurse in Scattered recurs several times, the last time (so far) in "Downloaded." Just thought I'd nitpick a bit. ;-) Seriously, I'm still on the fence about the status of characters like Hoshi and the paramedic (Several of Hoshi's appearances come with no dialogue). Monsieurxander 12:20, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're right. I added the Hybrid to the list both because she's an important part of the story, and because, as a Cylon, she's expected to recur. Monsieurxander 12:20, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I object to characters that appear in more than one episode appearing on this list. Actually, I guess I object to the list name more than anything else. If it's "recurring" characters, we can't include characters from single episodes. If we want to include prominent single-episode characters, the list should be moved back to "minor". Minor doesn't mean completely insignificant. A character like Abinell is significant to one episode, but minor to the entire series. -- Fru1tbat 13:16, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree, re: list name. "Minor" seems to fit better. I don't think any of these characters have passed the 20 episode mark, and, by my count, 42 episodes have aired (including the miniseries and the webisodes). I agree that "minor" doesn't mean they can't have a significant impact. Monsieurxander 06:23, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm not sure that episode count is necessarily the right criterion to apply here, at least in some cases. Specifically, I don't think that Samuel Anders and, to a lesser extent, Tory Foster, qualify as "minor characters", as they have been revealed to be central to the remaining plot of the show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.173.56.106 (talk) 00:20, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

edit

Does anyone believe that this list should be changed? I believe that small thumbnails should be added to the webpage for clarity and more information. Does anyone oppose this? Please respond before I spend my time putting pictures on here just to get them deleted. Sith Penguin Lord 00:09, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hoshi

edit

What is wrong about doing an article on Mr. Hoshi. He is a part of the story and I believe deserves an article and at least a picture. [[User:Sith Penguin Lord|Sith Penguin Lord]] 23:15, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sith, Hoshi is not a major character, and neither is Narcho and Stinger - those characters who have only minor scenes should stay in the main list and not have their own articles. If they have larger roles later on, then yes, give them a page, but when someone is on screen for 2 seconds an episode it's not worth it. Cyberia23 08:47, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cylon versions

edit

I've added Cylon versions of each model that are significant or recurring, without being a main or major character. I should note that each version of each model *is* a different character, the same way that fictional twins are two characters and not one.

Though, shouldn't the Season Three Number Three be a major character? (She's listed as New Caprica Leader Three, here, for wont of a better title) I think she might be good to go to the Regular Characters template.

  • D'Anna Biers - one episode, major focus of episode
  • Armistice Station Six - one of the most memorable scenes... because it is a statement of how the new BSG is different from the old.
  • Shelley Godfrey - major plotpoint for an episode
  • Gina - featured over several episodes.

I have not listed Sharon Agathon or Sharon Valerii, as they are both regular characters. This also applies to Caprica Six and Six in Baltar's Head.

132.205.93.19 03:34, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is wholly unnecessary. All of the Sixes are already covered on the main Six page. And D'Anna Biers is already included under the "Number Three" listing. Monsieurxander 09:21, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

List of incidental characters with apparent import

edit

This is a list of suggestions for characters that might make the list, but are borderline in such cases.

  • Admiral Nagala - Fleet Admiral of Colonial Forces after the fall of Picon Fleet Headquarters, aboard Battlestar Atlantia, died with the loss of Atlantia.
  • Admiral Cormer - orders BSG41 (Battlestar Valkyrie) and Commander Adama to a Stealthstar to penetrate the Armistice Line.
  • George Birch - CAG of Galactica after Apollo's desertion during the Roslin-v-Adama crisis.
I'm against all three. The first two have never even appeared, and have each only been referenced once. The third had a minor role in exactly one episode. Monsieurxander 09:11, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Diana Seelix should be merged into here, because she is a minor character, without much characterization. 132.205.44.134 00:42, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

OPPOSE - Seelix is becoming more involved with the show and her character is finally developing especially toward the end of 3rd season. I think she deserves her own article pending her increased screen time, especially since she's becoming involved with Samuel Anders and has to cope with his being a Cylon, his fling with Tory Foster, and Starbuck's return. Her story isn't over yet. Cyberia23 21:39, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
OPPOSE — Seelix has played a significant role in several story-lines to date (Kobol, the New Caprica Resistance, its aftermath ("Collaborators")) and appears to be headed for further character development (her relationship with Anders and the fallout from that, her flight training). Sullivan.t.j 05:18, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
OPPOSE- The Seelix article could already be longer than it is. She has continually become a bigger character throughout season III, and all signs point to her role growing. --Cjs56 20:04, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
OPPOSE - Totally oppose, Seelix is a lot more involved in the story than some, and got some decent coverage in Series 3, I agree we will see more of her —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.75.204.252 (talk) 14:08, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

WEAK OPPOSE Unlike Hamish below she actually has had a little character development, and a descent amount of screen time. -Viva43 08:22, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

SUPPORT - While she has appeared in a number of episodes, she really hasn't done much. She has had exactly one character arc (wanting to become a pilot), and that was resolved in a single episode. Monsieurxander 09:10, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

WEAK SUPPORT - She doesn't really have much that would really qualify as important to the series. She might have a bigger role in the future but until then she shouldn't have her page until we can clearly see that. A Lone Gamer 21:04, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

merge from Hamish McCall

edit
The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was merge

Hamish McCall should be merged here because Skulls is an incidental character, with which we have no useful information about. 132.205.44.134 00:44, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

OPPOSE - Like Seelix, Skulls seems to be having more screen time as well. Yes he is a minor character, but he may develop more in 4th season since he seems to be having an increased relationship with Racetrack, so we should probably keep his article open. Cyberia23 21:43, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Weak Support- "Skulls" happens to be around when a lot of things happen, but is rarely a major mover in those events. He isn't a big character, and his role shows little sign of increasing. --Cjs56 20:06, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
SUPPORT - For three seasons Skulls was only a minor, incidental character and there is nothing seriously indicating that his role could grow bigger (as opposed to Seelix, who obviously will play a more significant role in 4th season). -- 83.27.238.108 16:36, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
SUPPORT - incredibly minor character, and im amazed that he has his own page. he must have said 10 words the whole series. -Viva43 13:27, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
SUPPORT - Viva43 is spot on. He's had absolutely no storylines of his own, and he's had very little dialogue.Monsieurxander 09:14, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
SUPPORT - I agree with User:83.27.238.108. There is no reason to believe he is going to have any major role in the future of the series and that, so far, he seems a little less then even a minor character. I'm surprised he even has a name. A Lone Gamer 20:59, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Article needs major cleanup

edit
  • Colonial religious figures do not belong on this page. They would be better suited on a page specifically about Colonial religion.
  • Gina and Shelley should not be on this page, as they are already on Six's main page. Same goes with Boomer. The Cylons should be grouped according to their models. One page for Six(es), one for the Eights (Sharons). And a single listing each for Threes (D'Anna), Fives (Doral), and so on.
  • Scar is not portrayed by an actor. Its status as a character is debatable. It would be better suited in the main Cylon article.
  • "Episode count" is unreliable. The titles of the episodes should be listed, or the concept should be abandoned entirely.
  • Minor one shot characters like Asha Janik, Gianne, Shevon, Paya, the nuggets from "Scar," etc. do not belong here. The article is becoming way too cluttered, filled with unnecessary characters. This is not battlestarwiki.org. There is no reason to list every character that has ever briefly appeared on the show.
  • Characters should be listed ONCE on the page.

Monsieurxander 08:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Shevon, Paya, and Gianne should be listed, as they are major elements in the emotional development of Lee Adama. 132.205.44.5 00:57, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
If you're talking about one section referencing another section, why is that a problem? People appear in multiple groups, but their description is limited to one section. 132.205.44.5 00:59, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Move sections

edit

The following characters are critical to the plot, and should be moved from this page of minor characters to a page of more major characters: 1.3 Anders, Samuel T. 2.6 Zarek, Tom 3.18 Tigh, Ellen 5.1 Number One (Brother Cavil) 5.3 Number Three (D'anna Biers) 5.6 Hybrid 5.9 Agathon, Hera

They might not be primary characters, but they are definitely secondary characters, compared to the rest of the characters on this list who are tertiary.

I'll let someone else do it, because I'm not all that familiar with how the articles for BSG are set up. - Shaheenjim (talk) 11:48, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tyrol, Nicolas might need to be moved at some point. He was revealed as not being Tyrol's biological son so doesn't fit the Cylon/Half-Cylon section.--T. Anthony (talk) 05:46, 24 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Racetrack

edit

As her callsign is long, she is also called 'track

Where does this information come from? Racetrack is no longer to say than "Starbuck", "Hot Dog", "Husker", "Apollo", "Boomer", "Athena", and more, all two or three syllables. If she's called Track, it's just a nickname of a nickname, and that sounds like a fan group's pet name, not something that actually happened on screen.--WPaulB (talk) 01:40, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

That happens onscreen. And it's not a nickname of a nickname, it's a nickname of a callsign, which is a different animal altogether. 65.94.252.195 (talk) 11:50, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Questionable entries

edit

There are several entries in this list that I would say don't qualify as "minor":

  • Sam Anders
  • Tory Foster
  • Six (unless you're talking about a specific minor Six, such as Natalie or Gina)
  • Eight (again, unless you're talking about a specific minor Eight, such as the one who helped get D'Anna from the Resurrection Hub...although she wasn't named)
  • One/Two (all seem to be interchangable, and as such it would be hard to say "this one's a minor"; as a group, they certainly play a major role)
  • It could even be argued that some regular recurring characters (e.g. Doc Cottle, Racetrack, Hot Dog, Zarek) are of dubious inclusion.
  • Why is Hera listed as a Cylon? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.184.87.181 (talk) 02:49, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Now, I can understand why someone like Anders got on this list in the first place: he really was fairly minor in the beginning. But his role steadily grew, especially with the New Caprica and Final Five arcs. By season 4, he had as much screen time as, say, Tyrol — and far more than Gaeta or Dualla, who aren't on the list.

Likewise to Tory: by the end, she was far more significant than Billy Keikeya, who isn't on the list.EJSawyer (talk) 20:52, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

It would be so much easier to convert this to a standard list of characters and just list the major characters as well. 65.94.252.195 (talk) 11:52, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Where is Cally Tyrol?

From the Cult of Baltar:

  • Derrick (sick boy healed by Baltar)
  • Tracey Anne

  • Gaeta isn't on this list or on the list of main characters as of the time of this writing. Maybe it would be better to keep all the characters on the same page so they don't get dropped from one list without being added to the other. --97.83.161.38 (talk) 14:22, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
