Inconsistent municipal statuses
editWe have two reliable sources, StatCan and the GoNWT, reporting conflicting municipal statuses. Looks like some further careful research is necessary to confirm which is correct or most official of the two. Hwy43 (talk) 21:50, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- It looks like the NWT one lists both municipalities and communities, whereas the statscan one (which I used to build this list) lists just municipalities. Perhaps I am wrong...! Mattximus (talk) 22:13, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- My concern was moreso whether Behchoko was a "community government" or "town". I think there is a couple more inconsistencies of this sort with others currently on the list. I think you are correct that their are 24 municipalities. The others must be communities of a lesser status. Hwy43 (talk) 22:26, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
Size
editThis version is not clear. It links to List of Canadian provinces and territories by area#Land area which gives a sourced figure of 1,183,085 km2 while the source in the article gives 1,143,793 km2. The edit summary makes it clear but that is no good for the readers It needs to define what land are is being talked about. If not then people other than me are going to think it is talking about the full area. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 21:12, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry I had to revert, the wording you used was very confusing. I think we should discuss changes here and then apply them rather than revert/change/revert etc... At least for now, this [1] is the most up to date census based data on the land area of all provinces and territories, do you have a different source you would rather use? Mattximus (talk) 22:32, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- I re-added the spelling for Behchokǫ̀ to avoid redirect. Mattximus (talk) 22:33, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- I first saw this with the summary "round to nearest km" but that was an odd looking rounding. I checked the source but I got "Warning The website is currently unavailable We are currently experiencing a large volume of requests. Please try again later." I took that to mean that it would be up again later rather than dead. I went to check in the NWT article and noticed the 1,183,085 figure which was aalso sourced. Because the correct source was missing I figured that you had intended to round something else in the article. When I saw the edit by Hwy43 and checked their source I saw that it uses the 1,143,793 figure. However, most people when thinking of the land area would expect that it is referring to the higher one. Thus it should be defined as to what land area is being talked about. By the way there is nothing wrong with the source it was just not working when I looked.
- I re-added the spelling for Behchokǫ̀ to avoid redirect. Mattximus (talk) 22:33, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- The second thing was that it was listed as second largest territory. That's fine for Canadian readers who know that Quebec is a province and Nunavut is a territory but the List of Canadian provinces and territories by area only shows one Territory and two areas larger than the NWT. So it could confuse a non-Canadian reader who does not know that territory is talking about a specific term (it may also confuse the simple minded at first glance).
- By the way the reason for the difference is size might be accounted for by the removal of the National Parks. They add up to 63,390 km2. Of course that adds up to more than 1,183,085. But if the parks area includes water then that might account for it. Pure speculation and nothing to use in the article. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 01:11, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hi CambridgeBayWeather, your original good faith revert was totally warranted given the edit summaries that were accidentally misleading (also made in good faith). Had I not been privy to what the true intent here was, I would have reverted it myself. The source of the alternate land area value of 1,183,085 is back. If I can speculate based on my GIS training, Natural Resources Canada uses a different cartographic projection than Statistics Canada. Further, the precision and accuracy of freshwater bodies and coastal shorelines used by each agency could very well differ. Since the primary source for population counts and land areas of the municipalities in the article is from StatCan's latest census, it is best to use the same source at the territorial level rather than the different NRCan source. Hope this helps. Hwy43 (talk) 02:29, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
- One of the things that will persist as confusing is the different territorial land areas between this article and the wikilinked List of Canadian provinces and territories by area#Land area. The best solution to potentially resolve is maybe to simply remove the wikilink. Hwy43 (talk) 02:35, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
- After sleeping on it I think it's possible that the only time confusion would occur is if the source stops working again and someone checked another. I guess I had forgotten about the coastline paradox. Things work when we all assume good faith. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 08:36, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
