Requested move
editList of nutritional advice guidelines and schematics → List of nutrition guides – The current titles of these new articles are unnecessarily wordy and make wikilinking a chore. As the second title already indicates, the first title's "nutritional advice guidelines" is redundant (guidelines are advice) and can be reduced to "nutrition guidelines." Further, "guidelines and schematics" can be reduced to "guides," as both guidelines and schematics are guides. Additionally, U.S.D.A. should be USDA, as that is the abbreviated form that the organization uses.[1] Thanks for your consideration! 76.105.176.44 (talk) 00:19, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
5 A Day
edit5 A Day is totally missing, which is also really big advertised by the German government.(that's already lacking in the English Wikipedia article) mabdul 11:54, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Eatwell plate
editI was wondering if we could get an image of the eat well plate (I'm not sure about all the licensing etc etc, so would be grateful if someone might do that!). Also the Dietary Reference Values page will need one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lionfish0 (talk • contribs) 22:52, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Images in lists
editThere is no ban on using non-free images in lists, but there are guidelines on how to use them. I believe that we can follow those guidelines rather than ban non-free images. To go through the guidelines point-by-point:
- Images that show multiple elements of the list at the same time, such as a cast shot or montage for a television show, are strongly preferred over individual images. Such an image should be provided by the copyright holder or scanned/captured directly from the copyrighted work, instead of being created from multiple non-free images by the user directly (as the "extent" of use is determined by the number and resolution of non-free images, and not the number of files.)
- There are no images showing multiple nutrition guides, as they are each produced by independent organizations.
- Images which are discussed in detail in the context of the article body, such as a discussion of the art style, or a contentious element of the work, are preferable to those that simply provide visual identification of the elements.
- This is the primary reason for showing the visual guides on this page. The guides are not merely illustrating or identifying the subject, the guides — visual charts — are themselves the subjects, and their image elements are discussed in detail as the central focus of the article. This is different from, say, images of characters in a fictional work, where the images are not the characters themselves but merely illustrations of the characters. Canada's Food Guide could be an example of an exception, where the rainbow image is more of a cover illustration for the textual guide and does not convey significant information itself.
- An image that provides a representative visual reference for other elements in the article, such as what an alien race may look like on a science-fiction television show, is preferred over providing a picture of each element discussed.
- Because each image is itself the subject of significant commentary, and one country's guide does not represent another's, I believe each visual guide has a valid rationale for use in this article. However, there are many similar food pyramids and food wheels. In the common interests of compromise and reducing clutter, we can focus on guides that have significant stylistic distinctions from others. For example, Japan's spinning top, South Korea's bicycle, and China's pagoda are all clearly different, and a food wheel is not representative of them. But among food plates/circles/wheels, there are many examples in the same general style as the UK's Eatwell Plate: A pie chart with images of foods on it. The US guide is significantly different in that it neither is a pie chart nor uses food images. So the UK and US guides could represent all food plates/circles/wheels, barring discovery of something remarkably different. The same reasoning could be applied to food pyramids.
- If another non-free image of an element of an article is used elsewhere within Wikipedia, referring to its other use is preferred over repeating its use on the list and/or including a new, separate, non-free image. If duplicating the use of a non-free image, please be aware that a separate non-free fair use rationale must be supplied for the image for the new use.
- Because of the preference here, this article could simply link to Canada's Food Guide instead of repeating its use here. This guideline does provide instruction for doing otherwise, though, and isn't a reason to create lots of individual pages in order to remove all the images from the list.
- For media that involves live actors, do not supply an image of the actor in their role if an appropriate free image of the actor exists on their page (as per WP:BLP and above), if there is little difference in appearance between actor and role. However, if there is a significant difference due to age or makeup and costuming, then, when needed, it may be appropriate to include a non-free image to demonstrate the role of the actor in that media.
- Not applicable.
- Barring the above, images that are used only to visually identify elements in the article should be used as sparingly as possible. Consider restricting such uses to major characters and elements or those that cannot be described easily in text, as agreed to by editor consensus.
- As noted in the second point, these are not images "used only to visually identify," these images are the subject of significant commentary themselves.

- I've put several food guide images on the Files for Upload page, if anyone wants to approve them. 76.105.176.44 (talk) 15:50, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
