I think pictures of some famous natives would very much add to this new article. --Revolución (talk) 00:03, 25 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

A page similar to this one. List of people from San Francisco, is currently under review as an article for deletion, for reasons which would apply to this article as well. I am conducting an RfC on the talk page of the above-mentioned list to determine whether the concensus agrees on keeping such lists or not. Any and all comments are more than welcome. Natives vs. residents

edit

I've recently noticed that people not from Jax, but had in the past or are now currently residents of Jax are repeatedly being added to the list. There is also the problem of Zephaniah and Anna Kingsley being members of this list, neither of whom were born there. The list used to be titled "Natives of Jacksonville," but this has since changed, and perhaps the criteria should change along with that. Although these and others are not technically from Jax, there seems to be a strong concensus that they should be added to the list. Should we create new sections for natives and residents, or should we just filter out all of the non-natives? Thoughts? María: (habla ~ cosas) 19:24, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow, I wrote that a year ago. Since no one has commented, and this page continues to be named "people from Jacksonville," I've made the first move in cutting several people who are not originally from Jacksonville. It seems strange to note local bands and companies that have formed in Jax and then list important non-natives alongside them. If people disagree, however, please feel free to restore the few I have removed. María (habla conmigo) 19:39, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maria, I didn't read your post until I had made mine below. This problem would definately be seen very differently if the title was "Natives of Jacksonville".Unschool (talk) 21:03, 23 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

"From" vs. "In"

edit

A couple of weeks ago, I moved this from List of people in Jacksonville, Florida to List of people from Jacksonville, Florida. I did this because it was clear to me, looking at the list, that there were people on the list who were no longer "in" Jacksonville, either because they had moved or died.

Just now I was looking over the edit history and saw that it was in fact just recently moved to List of people in Jacksonville, Florida by Mgreason, arguably the most prolific Wikipedian in things Jacksonvillian. I have no desire to get into a dispute over this matter (and hardly feel strongly enough about it to get worked up), and ask for others to make their feelings known. I acknowledge that there is a difference in meaning, and that there are people who are "from" but not "in" Jacksonville, and vice versa.

My only argument in favor of using "from" is this: While people living in Jacksonville may not consider Tony Boselli to be "from" Jacksonville, he is nonetheless, by continuing to live here, becoming established and is likely seen by many others outside of Jacksonville as being "from" Jacksonville. After all, where are any of us from? Are we only from the town in which we were born? If I was born in Minneapolis but moved to Milwaukee when I was six months old and lived there until I was 20, am I from Milwaukee or Minneapolis? I think that reasonable people could take either side. Unschool (talk) 21:01, 23 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Generally such lists include Natives and Residents, as people who live and work in an area also make real contributions to it.
I highly recommend that this list be alphabetized and maintained that way, as are most others of this type. It is impossible to find people on this list.Parkwells (talk) 21:04, 25 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Notability

edit

The general standard on Wikipedia is that a subject must be "notable" in order to justify an article. Using the same standard, a subject or person must be "notable" in order to justify inclusion on a list. Recently, there have been a number of "artists" added who do not have an article and probably do not meet that standard required for an article. I'm going to begin culling those people from the list, and I will notify the user who added them of this standard. If the subject has an article, they will be on the list.
