None, really. But hey, who cares? Fantom 19:52, July 23, 2005 (UTC)

Fictional characters

edit

Can we put fictional characters in this list? Fantom 19:51, July 23, 2005 (UTC)

pecular grouping

What's with "Miscellaneous Celebrities, Beauty Pageant Winners, Cheesecake Models, etc."

Who decides who's a "Cheesecake" model, versus just a plain "model" (which has another section)? These long section names are rediculous. The whole page needs consolidation, into a few simple groupings. Other bad terms to use are things like "Do-Gooders". Not exactly encyclopedic. --Rob 16:44, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Cheesecake model" is a polite term for someone whose "modeling" basically consists of posing nude for the purposes of titillation. There is a pretty solid and objective difference between that kind of model and a regular model, who is hired by designers to model clothes.Acsenray 19:08, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Joseph M. Parker

edit

Someone using IP addresses 205.56.145.34 and 205.56.145.36 has twice added "Joseph M. Parker (United States Navy) (Petty Officer 3rd Class)" to the "Soldiers, Sailors, etc." section. I won't object to this if it can be shown that this person is indeed someone famous from Ohio. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MarkBrooks (talkcontribs) 16:21, 6 December 2006 (UTC).Reply

YOu forgot Carmen Electra born and raised in Cincinnati—Preceding undated comment added by 65.27.242.251 (talk) 00:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey, Earl Derr Biggers, the author who created famed fictional detective Charlie Chan, was from Warren, Ohio. I did not see his name under authors. Unless, ... I missed it ... ? L. Thomas W. 20:16, 13 September 2007 (UTC)ThomasReply

And then, Danny Thomas, comedic actor and singer, famous in 1950's television, was from Toledo, Ohio. I don't see him listed under actors. L. Thomas W. 20:20, 13 September 2007 (UTC)ThomasReply

actors?

edit

I've looked a few lists by State in Wikipedia, and this is the first one to have male and female actors, just "actors". For example, first entry from List of people from Indiana#Film and theatre entertainers section: Lillian Albertson, actress, producer (Noblesville). 88.114.246.209 (talk) 17:25, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

See Gender neutral language. Female actors are often referred to as actresses, but they are actors (who happen to be female). This article follows Wikipedia's preferred convention in this regard; some others may not. General Ization Talk 17:29, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Duh. It starts: Gender-neutral language (Gender neutrality in English) avoids constructions that might be interpreted by some readers as an unnecessary reinforcement of traditional stereotypes. And I think none of the instances told there is appropriate here. The closest one seems to be Uncommon gender-marked terms, which "actress" is not. 188.238.24.22 (talk) 04:47, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Suggested addition

A prominent person from Ohio to include in the Businesspeople, entrepreneurs section would be technology entrepreneur Michael J. Saylor, who grew up in Fairborn, near Dayton. Suggested bullet point:

I'd do it myself, but I have a financial COI; Mr. Saylor's firm is a client of my company. Plazak + @JoeyofthePriuses: you've both been active here recently—one of you willing to consider adding it? WWB Too (Talk · COI) 19:56, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I added him, but is it seriously a conflict of interest to add a guy to a Wikipedia article @WWB Too:? JoeyofthePriuses (talk) 20:15, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Much appreciated, JoeyofthePriuses! I'm super-careful never to edit client pages, following the advice of WP:PSCOI, even when it seems like a no-brainer. Better safe than sorry. Best, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 20:40, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Addition to famous Ohio journalists

edit

I would like to nominate Januarius MacGahan, a foreign correspondent from Ohio whose reports to the London Daily News in the late 1870s on Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria helped lead to the latter’s freedom after 5 centuries of Ottoman oppression. MacGahan was born in Perry County in 1844 and died in Constantinople in 1878 of typhus contracted during his coverage of the Russian-Turkish war that he, effectively, helped start.
