Suggestions for improvement?
editIt should be noted that work on this list has been suspended pending the review of its potential deletion, as it is pointless to put in data which may be deleted in a day or two. However, any comments on how to improve the list are more than welcome. This is the first list of this type I have created that has drawn any amount of attention, so I welcome any comments. I already anticipate trying to add verified birth and death years to all names where possible, and, depending upon the length of the list, all the individuals mentioned as being born in San Francisco in the books I am using as references provided that they do not easily fall under some subcategory, for instance, San Francisco Giants personnel. Also, I would be very interested in knowing whether any of you think there would be any value in creating a list of baseball players from California organized according to their place of birth, with a link to that list on this page, as that also would make the final list more workable. Other similar lists could be considered as well. Thank you for having read this comment, and for any response you may choose to give.
P. S. I am myself utterly incompetent at picture insertion and selection, and unfortunately (?) know that. However, if any of you knew of pictures which you think might improve the list, and actually knew how to put them in (unlike me) I would be greatly appreciative. merger question & vote
editI vote: merge.Dogru144 00:52, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Another vote for merge
editThis seems redundant. Also, I agree with your recommendation for the same in regards to the List_of_people_from_Chicago.--Nik 04:49, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, the merge was already done. Pairadox 05:09, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
Utility
editThe list is relatively useless in its current form:
- It's too long, including infamous, famous, locally famous, and those known in a specific niche.
- It's divided by profession of the person, rather than why they are associated with the city. Some people are on the list because they were born, lived, or died there. Some because they have professional careers associated with the city. Some because of a signature moment that took place in the city. Some for all of the above. For example, Gracie Allen was born in the city, but lived her professional and personal life elsewhere. In contrast, Tony Bennett was born in the city and his signature song is an homage to it. In other words, Allen is associated by mere coincidence while Bennett and the city are interconnected.
At a minimum, I would like to see names removed if the wikipedia article about that person doesn't include a notable reference to the city. For example, the only mention in David Fincher's article is that The Game (1997 film) takes place in San Francisco; he otherwise lacks (according to wikipedia) any professional, personal, or other relationship with the location. 75.36.181.195 (talk) 20:46, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
- This is not the only list-based article with the profession of the person as the listing definer (see List of people from Palo Alto, just for example). I would also like to see the criteria of how the person is connected to the place defined in the text. I don't think this relationship to the city should be how it is listed however since it is less common to search within a list for relationships. Jooojay (talk) 21:56, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Layout
editI am confused as to why part of this article is in a two column layout? It is really difficult to read when it is in this format and for some reason the references are also in this two column format as well. Can this be corrected? Jooojay (talk) 21:52, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
- Argh, I came here to complain about the same thing. Also, there is no need for a separate alphabetical listing, since categories take care of that generally. I might come back and go at this with a hacksaw if no one objects. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 23:02, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hey ♠PMC♠ - Looks like the List of people from Santa Cruz, California also has a similar layout issue happening now too. :/ I support you hacksawing this list! Jooojay (talk) 04:53, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
Steve Jobs
editSteve Jobs is currently included on this list, with no explanation or connection to San Francisco. He grew up in the Mountain View/Los Altos area and lived in a similar Santa Clara County area – Palo Alto/Woodside. I think it would be valuable if this list had a note mentioning the person's relationship to SF with a citation. Jooojay (talk) 19:41, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
- His own article specifically says he was born and put up for adoption in San Francisco. YMMV of course on whether or not simply being born someplace matters, but I think it's relevant enough. (As an aside, did you see my reply to your comment above?) ♠PMC♠ (talk) 20:08, 24 July 2017 (UTC) Sources: [1][2]
- It really makes a huge difference if we add that fact after Steve Jobs name, just adding someone's name to a list without context is confusing. I agree with you ♠PMC♠ about the layout but I honestly don't know where to start? I have never seen this layout before. Jooojay (talk) 04:16, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
