Talk:List of people who descended to Challenger Deep

Latest comment: 2 years ago by Kmusser in topic Esri expedition

I've added an alternative table for consideration. It is solidly sourced and linked for the 2019-2020 period. The earlier dives should have better links and sourcing but I don't want to spend the time if this table is not selected as the preferred alternative. Better source for Rost --- https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-53112621 at the bottom of the article lists the first 12 people into the Challenger Deep including Rost. How do I get the tag removed and the new ref attached? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gwyncann (talkcontribs) 00:06, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Done -- Rost better source added; citation needed tag removed from Rost dive. Unable to provide good source yet for Wigginton dive. Corrected Wigginton dive into eastern pool, vice incorrect western pool.

Recommend deleting first table in its entirety. Second table is sourced; first table is not. Lost info of first table is only the claimed depth for each dive. Depth info is historically exposed to criticism and correction over time and efforts to document depths achieved would become data of contention and wiki arguementation. No one has objected to deleting first table in favor of the second table in 5 weeks of notification. Now implementing change.Gwyncann (talk) 17:31, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Chinese Dive (2020) and Ring of Fire 2 expedition 2021

edit

Frustratingly, there is little confirmed public information about the Chinese excursion to CD in late 2020.[1][2] The identity of the three(?) divers is unknown. If it is confirmed that the vessel Fendouzhe reached the bottom, the divers would be individuals 14, 15, and 16 (tie) to reach CD, at a reported depth of 10,909m (35,790 ft). In March, 2021, Victor Vescovo published photographs of the cable believed to be from the Chinese ROV used during the November 2020 expedition, which he characterized as a "hazard to navigation".[3]

The identities of the three members of the Chinese team of Fendouzhe in the dive that took place on Nov 10th 2021 are provided in this article [4], the photos of the Chief designer of Fendouzhe, Zhao Yang matches up with the available photo of the three crews members [5]. In the article, it was stated that prior to this, there has been a few descents to the Western Pool, however the identities of the divers that took part then are unknown. There is also a Chinese video (from CCTV) of another diver, Liu Yeyao, who is the designer of the acoustic communication system for Fendouzhe[6][7] that shows him within the cabin at a stated depth of 10909m. However it is unclear when exactly this dive took place, and who are the other members onboard — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.200.95.250 (talk) 15:24, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

17. Richard Garriott[8] joins Victor Vescovo, 01 MAR 2021[9] (Eastern Pool, south wall)(Vescovo dive #9).[10]
18. Victor Vescovo and Michael Dubno 03 MAR 2021 (Ring of Fire 2 Expedition Leader and explorer)(Eastern Pool, north wall)(Vescovo dive #10).[11]
19. Victor Vescovo and Hamish Harding 05 MAR 2021 (Ring of Fire 2 Expedition Leader and polar pilot/explorer)(Eastern Pool, transect)(Vescovo dive #11)(WR attempt - longest duration and distance dive to FOD).

This brings the total count of FOD dives in Limiting Factor to 13 as of 05 MAR 2021.

The next on the list is Larry Connor. https://www.wdtn.com/news/local-news/halfway-to-history-connor-completes-3-dives-to-ocean-depths/ Connor made a series of three Mariana Trench dives. The most noteworthy was not CD, but a hadal seamount, the first in history. Patrick Lahey was the pilot.--47.196.10.161 (talk) 19:18, 2 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
