At some point the Manhattan north river piers were renumbered from the old sequential system starting at the battery to the roughly "street + 40" system. I cannot find anything at all about this process after a quick search, but the renumbering when you compare maps over the years is evidence enough that it happened. Any further research into this, particularly by anyone actually in NYC as I highly doubt anything relating to this would be digitized, would help immensely.
