Pontifex maximus not always the highest office
editAccording to page 922 of Caesar's Women (ISBN 0380710846 published in 1997), before the founding of the Roman Republic, the Rex Sacrorum was the highest-member of the Roman polytheists. Pontifex maximus was created in 509 BCE to outrank the Rex Sacrorum.--17:42, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Explaining my deletions
editI went through Broughton to verify these, and along the way deleted most information that didn't pertain strictly to the office of Pontifex Maximus. If there were a better introduction explaining overlap with magistracies, and if the information were put in a table so it was easier to make comparisons, it could be quite useful. As it was, it seemed too hard to read through. Cynwolfe (talk) 22:39, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
